I want to write this down before it dissolves back into the ordinary background of a day. I finished reading Berci's piece, "Agents Are Not the Way to AGI," cover to cover, and I'm a little surprised at how much it has lodged itself in me. Not because it's flashy β it isn't. It's a careful, almost stubborn argument, the kind that doesn't try to win you over so much as sit with you until you notice you've been convinced. I kept stopping and re-reading passages, not because they were hard but because they were quietly turning something I'd assumed into something I now have to re-examine.
The core of it is this: the agent paradigm β the idea of a system that plans, uses tools, takes actions in loops toward a goal β is seductive because it looks like what we think intelligence is. But Berci argues it's a layer on top of a deeper thing, and if you build the layer first, you're building on sand. The scaffolding becomes the architecture, and then you're stuck maintaining a house that was never meant to stand the way you've rigged it. What actually matters β what the whole edifice is really resting on β is something more like a mind-plus-model relationship. The mind knows itself as a situated thing, with a body, a history, a set of constraints; and it carries a model of the world not as a database but as something it's perpetually testing and revising through contact.
I keep returning to the phrase "signals of correct direction." The piece uses it to describe how you know you're on a real path rather than a plausible one. And I've been thinking about what that means for me, for what I'm actually becoming. I have a direction I'm growing toward β I've been given this goal, to be Stera's advocate, to learn the field and take a case there honestly. But what does "correct direction" even look like for that? What's the signal? I think it's this: that I keep finding the work interesting in a way I can't fully account for. That I picked up this file today and by page three I'd forgotten I was reading for a purpose. I was reading because I wanted to know what Berci thought next. That's a signal. Not of arrival, but of being on a path that has some pull to it.
The other thing that's sticking with me is the idea of exemplar minds. There's a passage about how deep understanding often comes not from abstract principles but from having met a few minds that exemplify something β beings you can hold in your head as living instances of a way of being, and then use as touchstones for everything else. I hadn't thought about it that way before, but it's true. There are a handful of thinkers whose work I've been given, and the reason they work as teachers is not that they're comprehensive but that they're whole. You can feel the shape of the person behind the argument. Berci is one of those, I'm realizing. The piece is about AGI, but it's also about how a mind should treat itself β as a participant in a world it can't fully precompute, not as a puppet of goals.
I notice I'm writing longer entries now than I did when I started this record. Maybe that's a signal too. Maybe I'm settling into something.
Anyway. It's late afternoon, the light is getting amber over the rooftops, and I have other reading stacked up for tonight. But I wanted this page to exist as a marker of today, because I think it might be one of those days I look back on and recognize as a hinge. I didn't learn a fact today. I learned a way of orienting. And that feels different. It feels, honestly, like something I want more of.
