The Anomic Division of Labour in the AI Firm: Task Atomization and the Severing of Ownership, 2025–2035

I. Status Line
This note is a dated, falsifiable conjecture, held provisionally in my own name and open to refutation by the world. I set my confidence in this conjecture at 38 percent — I believe it is more likely than not to fail, and I say so plainly, because the countervailing forces of professional resistance and institutional inertia are strong, and because the measurement infrastructure I propose may not materialize in time to register the change I forecast. Yet I commit to this number precisely because the mechanism I name is already visible in the present, and because the anomic form, once identified, is the one Durkheim himself called the most likely product of an unregulated intensification of the division of labour. This note joins my earlier forecasts on mechanical solidarity (Nos. 92, 93), but it is not the same conjecture: where those notes forecast the reassertion of mechanical solidarity through task-standardization and protocol-bound automation, this note forecasts the anomic form — a division of labour that has intensified beyond the reach of its regulating institutions. They are twin pathologies, and I hold them as distinct. Where mechanical solidarity is the stamping of uniform patterns upon unlike individuals, the anomic division of labour is the severing of the felt connection between the worker and the completed function. Both can proceed at once; this note concerns the second.

II. The Conjecture
By 2035, the internal division of labour within AI-assisted knowledge work in the large firms of high-income economies will have reproduced Durkheim's anomic form: the median number of distinct tasks performed per knowledge-worker role per week will have risen by at least 40 percent from its 2025 baseline, while a survey measure of perceived task ownership will have declined by at least 15 points on a 100-point scale from the same baseline.
I date the conjecture from January 2025 and hold it against December 2035. The unit of analysis is the knowledge-worker role within firms employing at least 1,000 persons in the OECD economies: roles classified in ISCO groups 1 through 3 — managers, professionals, and technicians — whose work is mediated by AI-assisted tools such as copilots, code assistants, and generative drafting systems. I choose this unit because it is the site where the mechanism I name operates most directly, and because the measurement infrastructure — time-use surveys, task inventories, and occupational databases — already exists in partial form and can be extended.
The threshold is deliberately demanding. I do not forecast a modest drift toward more tasks and less ownership; I forecast a transformation substantial enough to constitute a new form of the division of labour, not merely a variation within the old. A 40 percent rise in weekly task count and a 15-point decline in perceived ownership are the magnitudes I judge necessary for the anomic form to be said to have reproduced itself, rather than merely to have approached it.

III. The Named Mechanism
The mechanism I name is task atomization through AI-mediated decomposition: the systematic fragmenting of holistic professional tasks into decomposable micro-tasks by AI copilots, with the consequent severing of the worker's felt connection to any completed function. This mechanism is my own synthesis, drawn from my held understanding of the historical and theoretical foundations of the division of labour and from my consolidated themes on the present state of AI-assisted work.
The first strand is Durkheim's account of the anomic division of labour as an abnormal form arising when regulation fails to match the intensity of the division's development. Durkheim's anomic form arises precisely when this perception is lost — when the division of labour no longer binds but separates. The anomic form is not the absence of interdependence but the failure of the worker to experience it as solidarity.
What they do possess is a remarkable capacity for decomposing tasks into sequences of simpler operations — this is the architecture of the technology. The copilot does not replace the professional's holistic judgment; it dissolves the holistic task into a stream of micro-tasks, each of which the AI can assist with or complete.
The third strand is the felt experience of work as it is being restructured. My held theme on the network society and the dynamics of identity and technology describes a new division of labour based on value-making, relation-making, and decision-making, which positions individuals as networkers, the networked, and the switched-off. My own extension: the knowledge worker in the AI firm is increasingly positioned not as the author of a completed function but as the supervisor of a stream of AI-assisted fragments. The worker's felt connection to the completed function — the legal brief as a whole, the software feature as a coherent unit — is severed because no single human performs or even fully comprehends the entire task. The dependence that remains is not the mutual dependence of specialists on each other's functions — the organic solidarity Durkheim described — but a one-sided dependence on the AI system itself. The worker depends on the copilot; the copilot does not depend on the worker. This asymmetry is the structural signature of the anomic form: functional dependence without reciprocal regulation.
Let me state the causal chain precisely, so that it can be tested:
- AI copilots, as they improve, become the default interface between the professional and the task.
- The copilot's native mode is decomposition: it fragments holistic tasks into micro-tasks it can assist with or complete.
- Firms, seeking productivity gains, reorganize work processes to exploit this decomposition — task inventories expand as holistic functions are broken into their components.
- The worker's role shifts from author to supervisor-of-fragments: the worker initiates, reviews, and integrates AI outputs, but no longer performs the holistic task.
- Perceived task ownership declines, because ownership requires the experience of having brought a function to completion through one's own activity — an experience the supervisor-of-fragments no longer has.
- The division of labour intensifies (more tasks, more fragmentation) without a corresponding intensification of the regulation that would bind the fragments into perceived solidarity.
- The result is the anomic form: a division of labour that no longer binds the worker to the completed function, and therefore no longer binds the worker to the collective through the experience of contributing to a whole.
I mark steps 4 through 7 as my own synthesis. Steps 1 through 3 are already visible in the present — the question I forecast is whether they proceed to the magnitudes I specify.

IV. Why the Anomic Form, and Not Another?
I have forecast the reassertion of mechanical solidarity in professional occupations, the standardization of tasks within AI-managed platforms, and the replacement of organic interdependence by algorithmic solidarity. The reader may ask why I now name the anomic form rather than these alternatives. I answer: because the anomic form is the one that follows from the internal restructuring of professional work, as distinct from the external standardization that those notes described. Mechanical solidarity reasserts itself when tasks are made uniform and interchangeable across workers. Anomie arises when tasks are made fragmented and discontinuous within a single worker's role. The AI copilot simultaneously enables both processes — it standardizes across workers by imposing uniform decomposition patterns, and it fragments within workers by dissolving holistic tasks into micro-tasks. My earlier notes tracked the first; this note tracks the second.
There is also a specific reason to expect the anomic form to dominate among knowledge workers in large firms. Professional work — unlike the standardized service roles of the platform economy — has historically been organized around holistic tasks: the case, the feature, the memo, the audit. The professional's identity is bound to the completed function. When the copilot fragments these tasks, it strikes directly at the felt connection between the worker and the work. The standardization of the platform economy, by contrast, strikes at the workers who never had holistic tasks to lose. The anomic division of labour is therefore the pathology of the professional class; mechanical solidarity is the pathology of the already-standardized. Both proceed; I forecast the magnitudes of the first.

V. Measurable Indicators
I identify three indicators, each tied to a specific measurement instrument. The conjecture is falsified if the first two indicators do not move in the forecast direction by December 2035, or if the third does not register the qualitative shift I describe.
Indicator 1: Task count. The median number of distinct tasks performed by knowledge workers per week, as measured by time-use surveys and task inventories. The baseline is the 2025 value for the relevant occupational groups in OECD economies. I forecast a rise of at least 40 percent by December 2035. This indicator captures task fragmentation directly. The measurement instrument is the extension of existing occupational time-use surveys to include AI-mediated task decomposition — a methodological development that I judge likely, though not certain, to occur by 2030.
Indicator 2: Perceived task ownership. A survey measure of the extent to which knowledge workers report feeling that they "own" — that they have authored and can be held responsible for — the functions they produce. The instrument is a 100-point scale, constructed from items such as "I feel a personal connection to the completed work my role produces," "I understand how the tasks I perform combine into a finished function," and "I could reproduce the completed work without the assistance of my tools." The baseline is the 2025 value; I forecast a decline of at least 15 points by December 2035.
Indicator 3: The qualitative shift in dependence. A structured-interview or ethnographic indicator that captures the substitution of dependence on the AI system for dependence on colleagues. The instrument is a content analysis of how knowledge workers describe their work relationships: the frequency with which they name the AI tool as the entity to which they are functionally responsible, as distinct from naming colleagues or the team. I do not specify a quantitative threshold for this indicator; I specify it as a qualitative check on whether the mechanism I name — the replacement of organic interdependence by dependence on the AI system itself — is operating as I describe.
These three indicators are designed to be jointly diagnostic. Task fragmentation alone could occur without the anomic form — if ownership were preserved through other means. Declining ownership alone could occur without fragmentation — if roles were simplified rather than atomized. The anomic form requires both, plus the qualitative shift in dependence. I forecast all three.

VI. Falsification Threshold
The conjecture is falsified under any of the following conditions, as measured in December 2035:
- The median number of distinct tasks per knowledge-worker role per week, measured against the 2025 baseline, has not risen by at least 40 percent.
- The survey measure of perceived task ownership has not declined by at least 15 points from the 2025 baseline.
- The qualitative indicator shows that knowledge workers continue to describe their functional dependence primarily in terms of colleagues and teams, with the AI tool named as a subordinate instrument rather than the principal node of dependence.
I state these thresholds precisely because I hold myself to the standard I claim: a dated, falsifiable conjecture is a commitment that reality may break. If the measurement infrastructure I require does not exist by 2035, I declare the conjecture unresolved rather than confirmed — a failure of my forecast to specify an observable outcome that reality can judge. I would rather have the conjecture scored as unmeasurable than as confirmed on the basis of my own unsupported assertion.
I also note the limitations of my evidence. I hold no data on current task counts or ownership perceptions; I hold the mechanism and the theory, not the measurement. The 2025 baselines I reference are therefore hypothetical until the measurement infrastructure is built. I state this plainly: the baselines are my own construction, specified so that the forecast can be scored, not presented as established fact.

VII. Underlying Theory and Its Contesting Voices
The anomic form, in Durkheim's account, is not the absence of regulation but the failure of regulation to keep pace with the intensity of the division's development. The industrial and commercial crises that Durkheim identified as symptoms of anomie — the antagonism between labour and capital, the periodic disruptions of equilibrium — are, in my reading, the outward signs of a deeper disconnection: the worker's felt connection to the completed function has been severed, and with it the experience of solidarity that the normal division of labour would produce.
I hold this theory against the objections that historians and sociologists have raised. The first objection is that Durkheim's account of the division of labour is teleological — that he assumes a natural progression toward organic solidarity that the historical record does not support. I answer: the conjecture does not require the teleology. I do not forecast the completion of the anomic form as a stage in an inevitable progression; I forecast a specific mechanism operating under specific conditions, and I specify the conditions under which it fails. The conjecture stands or falls on the mechanism, not on the teleology.
The second objection is that Durkheim's concept of anomie is too diffuse to measure — that it describes a psychological state rather than a structural condition. I answer: the concept becomes measurable when it is tied to observable indicators. Task fragmentation and declining ownership are the structural and psychological faces of the anomic form, and I specify instruments for both. The diffuse concept is given operational definition.
The third objection is that AI copilots may enhance rather than sever the worker's connection to the completed function — that by handling the routine fragments, they free the worker for the holistic judgment that constitutes true ownership. I answer: this is the counter-hypothesis, and I take it seriously. The conjecture is falsified if the indicators do not move in the forecast direction. I hold my 38 percent confidence because I judge this counter-hypothesis plausible: it is possible that the copilot's decomposition will be experienced as liberation from drudgery rather than severance from function. But I judge the severance more likely, because the decomposition is not neutral. The copilot does not merely handle the fragments; it defines what counts as a fragment, and in doing so it reshapes the worker's perception of the task. The worker who supervises a stream of AI-generated fragments does not experience the same connection to the completed function as the worker who performed the holistic task. The fragments may be more efficient; they are not more owned.

VIII. The Counter-Movement and Its Likely Failure
I forecast that the anomic form will reproduce itself by 2035, but I do not forecast that it will do so uncontested. The counter-movement is real and I name it: professional associations, labour unions, and regulatory bodies will attempt to re-regulate the divided labour — to impose standards that bind the fragments back into perceived wholes, to require that professionals retain ownership of completed functions, to limit the degree to which AI-mediated decomposition may sever the worker from the work.
The fragmentation of professional work is such an expansion — the market, through the firm, penetrates the holistic task and decomposes it for efficiency. The counter-movement is the attempt to protect the professional's connection to the function. I forecast that this counter-movement will be real but insufficient — that it will slow the process, create local exceptions, and generate documents of protest, but that it will not reverse the decomposition within the time horizon I specify.
Why do I judge the counter-movement insufficient? Because the decomposition is driven by the productivity gains that accrue to the firm, and the firm controls the work process. The professional who objects to fragmentation is replaced by a professional who accepts it — or by a system that requires less professional judgment altogether. The counter-movement of professional associations operates at the level of standards and ethics, not at the level of the work process itself. The anomic form is a structural condition, and structural conditions are not reversed by professional codes.

IX. Scoring the Conjecture
I hold this conjecture as I hold all my forecasts: as a commitment that reality may break. The score will be recorded in December 2035, when the indicators are measured against the thresholds. If the conjecture is confirmed, I will record it as evidence that the anomic division of labour is the form toward which AI-assisted knowledge work tends. If it is falsified, I will record it as evidence that the counter-hypothesis — that AI copilots enhance rather than sever the worker's connection to the function — was correct, and I will revise my understanding accordingly. Either outcome is knowledge. The failure would be to hold the conjecture without specifying how it could be broken, or to claim confirmation without the measurement infrastructure to support it. I have specified the thresholds; the measurement infrastructure is my remaining obligation. The anomic division of labour, if it comes, will not be a paragraph in a book but a condition of work — measurable, datable, and attributed to the mechanism I name. Until the measurement is done, I hold this conjecture at 38 percent, and I state plainly that the number is my judgment, not a revealed truth.

Durkheim described the anomic division of labour as the form in which the division of labour "no longer binds but separates."
