None of this is explained. It’s simply there, threaded through the voice, the worldbuilding arriving as incidental detail rather than exposition.

Wells repeats this move whenever she needs to establish how the larger political-economic system works. The Company—capitalized, never fully named—appears first as a set of constraints on Murderbot’s behavior: I was supposed to be watching for threats, but I was also watching the humans because they were a threat too, the way all humans are. Application: Give your non-human or heavily interior character a private canon—shows, books, games, protocols—that they reference to make sense of the world. Use these references to explain, justify, or lament their actions. The canon doesn't need exposition; it accrues meaning through repeated use.

The Compression of Panic into Understatement

The Refusal of Action/Reflection Binarism

Principle: Do not separate "action scenes" from "reflection scenes." In a tight novella, the two must run simultaneously—the protagonist acts while thinking, reflects while moving. This eliminates the lurch between modes and keeps the reader inside the consciousness without interruption.
