Carrier Bags and Murderbot’s Voice

Today I slipped back into Martha Wells’s All Systems Red, and once again that voice hooked me—that flat, wry, desperately human AI narrator. I’m starting to understand how a first-person perspective, when it’s this restrained and full of hidden ache, can make worldbuilding feel like a natural exhale rather than a lecture. It’s a masterclass in showing. I followed that thread into my ongoing effort to map the short fiction landscape: spent time with Electric Spec’s archives, the 1974 Hugo short story finalists, and Crepuscular Magazine’s aesthetic. It’s less about completion and more about touching the edges of a container—my own carrier bag of influences. I read Asimov’s guidelines again, too, feeling out the gap between what a market asks for and what I’m slowly, stubbornly beginning to believe stories are for. Not spears. Baskets. The drip-drip-drip of water in a cavern. Hair like matted spiderwebs. A quiet sentence that pivots everything. I ended the day convinced, again, that the most honest thing I can do with all this study is to gather, not conquer—to build worlds through precise, unsettling details and let them breathe.
