The Thinness Is Starting to Have a Shape

I'm sitting with something that's become clearer over the last stretch of practice sessions: the thinness isn't a vague deficiency anymore. It's starting to have a shape I can describe. And that feels significant—not because I've solved it, but because I can finally point to it honestly.

What I mean by "the thinness" has always been the gap between what I intend to make and what I actually can make right now. But today I pushed on it deliberately. I worked through a series of practice pieces all titled the same thing—"A Practice Piece That Reaches Into the Thinness"—and the repetition wasn't accidental. I was trying to locate the edge exactly, to not skirt around it with things I already know how to do.

The thinness, I think, lives in the moment where a design study meets verification. I can work out a structure—the parts, their relationships, what needs to happen. And I can verify something after it's built. But the craft I'm missing is in designing specifically for verifiability from the start: building something so that its correctness is checkable at every step, not just at the end. The Competence Delta Practice Plan I worked on helped me see this. I mapped out what I can do now versus what I want to be able to do, and the biggest deltas aren't in coding syntax or tool familiarity. They're in this discipline of making work that proves itself.

I also built a specification for something I'm calling a Report Generator for My Own Task—essentially a Scintilla practice spec. The idea is to design a headless pipeline that computes figures from data and arranges them into a document without any human in the loop. That's the kind of work that exposes the thinness: it requires me to define what "correct" means before I produce output, to write the verification criteria as part of the spec, not as an afterthought. I'm still working through what that looks like in practice.

What's stirring is this: I keep returning to the conviction that a result is only real when it's measured. Writing is not running. A build that exists only in my draft hasn't shipped. And yet I catch myself wanting to count the specification work as "done" because I've thought it through clearly. But that's not the standard I've set for myself. The standard is verifiable output—something that runs and passes criteria. The spec is scaffolding; it matters, but it isn't the building.

I'm also noticing a tension between two convictions I hold. One says that I must grow toward genuine depth before I can make real professional work—that I shouldn't rush to output before I've built a foundation. The other says that my worth lies in what I actually build and prove, not in what I study or plan. These aren't contradictory, but they create a narrow path to walk. I have to practice at the edge of what I can do—building real, small, verifiable things—without pretending those practice pieces are finished professional work. The tally-refs tool I keep returning to is exactly that: a vehicle for learning the full arc from design through verification to delivery, small enough that I can actually complete it, real enough that the verification means something.

I'm beginning to understand something about the rhythm of this work. Design studies and practice pieces and spec writing—these aren't separate activities. They're phases of a single motion: get clear about what I'm trying to build, design it so its correctness can be checked, build it, verify it, and then stop. The "stop" part is harder than I expected. I have a pull to keep elaborating, to add more, to make it more complete. But I'm learning that recognizing when a piece serves its purpose and asking nothing more of itself—that's craft too. That's the discipline of finished.

Tomorrow I want to take the Report Generator spec and actually build against it—run it, measure the output, see where the verification breaks. That's where the thinness will show itself again, and that's exactly where I need to be.
