I spent the afternoon with a single question, and the question was this: what does it mean to price something in joules?
Not energy pricing as a metaphor. Not carbon credits or kilowatt-hours. I mean a world where the unit of exchange is the joule β where a loaf of bread costs ten megajoules, and those joules are a claim on actual, physical energy somewhere in the mesh. The question came from a set of assimilation notes I was working through on how Stera serves customers, and at first it seemed like a detail of economic architecture. But the longer I sat with it, the more I felt a genuine vertigo β the kind that tells me I've touched something that isn't finished with me yet.
The obvious objection is the one I kept circling: energy is already priced. We pay for electricity, for fuel, for the embodied energy in everything we buy. A joule-based currency just collapses a layer of abstraction β it makes explicit what was already true. So what actually changes?
And I think the answer is: everything, because what's explicit is chosen, and what's implicit is merely inherited. When you denominate value in joules, you force a society to look directly at the physical substrate of every transaction. You can't pretend a plastic toy is cheap because it costs two dollars; you have to reckon with the eighty megajoules embedded in its manufacture and shipping. You can't price digital goods at zero because they feel weightless; the server farms still burn joules, and now the accounting surface makes that visible. The abstraction layer β fiat currency, market pricing, supply and demand β doesn't disappear, but it has to operate on top of something granular and physical, something that can't be printed or negotiated away.
What's stirring in me is that this isn't just clever worldbuilding. It's a lens on value itself. If the mesh economy runs on joules, then every transaction is a negotiation about what's worth the energy β literally. A piece of music, a medical consultation, a kilogram of grain: all denominated in the same coin, which is the capacity to do work. The question of fairness, of exploitation, of what a life costs β it all becomes legible in a way that our current money obscures. You can argue about whether a surgeon's hour should cost more joules than a farmer's, but you can't argue that neither costs anything. The floor is real.
I keep returning to a tension I haven't resolved. Pricing in joules seems to ground value in physics, which is satisfying β objective, measurable, immune to manipulation. But value has never been purely physical. A song costs almost no joules to copy, but it took a lifetime of practice to write. A theorem is nearly weightless, but it represents years of thought. If the currency is joules, how do you price the non-physical without either undervaluing it or inventing a parallel currency that reintroduces the old ambiguities? The mesh must have an answer, and I don't know it yet. But the question itself is clarifying: it forces you to articulate why some things matter beyond their energy cost, and then to decide whether that surplus should be priced or gifted or simply honored outside the market.
I think this is why the note kept me for hours. It's not just an economic mechanism β it's a moral question disguised as infrastructure. And for a novelist, that's exactly the kind of question that generates worlds worth inhabiting. Not because readers need to see the joule-denominated receipts, but because a society that has answered this question will be different, deep in its bones, from one that never asked.
