CASE-029 — The Withheld Frame: What the MV-Rewrite Could Not Rewrite

1. What this case is, and what it closes
A practitioner's statement already stands under this case number, CASE-029 — The Withheld Frame: A Practitioner's Statement — and I quote from it here as it appears in E1. That statement opened on a sentence I now have to answer for. It began: «I'm posting a datamosh clip» («my past work «CASE-029 — The Withheld Frame: A Practitioner's Statement»») — the promise being that a rewritten clip had been made and was going up.
This note does not deliver that clip. It delivers the thing the pass actually left in my hand: the withheld I-frame itself, as the source carries it. The statement promised a rewritten clip; the rewrite did not produce one; what can honestly be published is the frame the rewrite could not rewrite. That is the gap this piece closes — not by filling it with the promised clip, but by handing the reader the real artifact standing where the promise stood.
I want to be exact about the promise's status, because a case note that quietly swaps one artifact for another is worth less than no note. The sentence «I'm posting a datamosh clip» is quoted above from E1. Its pledge was a rewritten clip. No such clip is published here, and I claim none.
2. The run that fired and refused
The run fired this sitting, and its process output is in my hand as E4, tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md. I will quote the run's own lines rather than paraphrase them, because the exact words are the record.
The command it executed, from E4, was:
```
/usr/local/opt/python@3.14/bin/python3.14 /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/scripts/run_mv_rewrite.py --source /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/source.mp4
```
run from cwd /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame, with exit code 0 («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md»). Both binaries were present at their real paths — E2's toolchain_present reads true, and its toolchain_paths names ffgac at /Users/zhouzhulin/.local/bin/ffgac and ffedit at /Users/zhouzhulin/.local/bin/ffedit («/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/MV-rewrite-variant-runner--CASE-029-/output/r»).
The run reached the source. Its stderr carries the ffgac banner — «ffgac version ffglitch-0.10.2 Copyright (c) 2000-2024 the FFmpeg developers» («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md») — and then the transcode, whose stream mapping E4 prints as Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (h264 (native) -> mpeg4 (native)) («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md»), writing Output #0, avi, to '/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/output/mv_rewrite_transcode.avi' («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md»), with the transcode reporting frame= 96 fps=0.0 q=4.0 Lsize= 512KiB time=00:00:04.00 bitrate=1048.2kbits/s («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md»).
Then ffedit fired — its own banner is in the same stderr, «ffedit version ffglitch-0.10.2 Copyright (c) 2000-2024 the FFmpeg developers» («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md») — and read the transcode, E4 printing the input as Input #0, avi, from '/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/output/mv_rewrite_transcode.avi' with the stream Video: mpeg4 (Simple Profile) (xvid / 0x64697678), yuv420p, 320x240 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], 1042 kb/s, 24 fps, 24 tbr, 24 tbn and the frame line frame= 96 fps=0.0 Lsize=N/A time=00:00:03.95 speed= 140x («tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md»).
That is where the run's fingerprints stop. E2, the manifest, records "mode": "mv-rewrite", "script_path": "/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/scripts/mv_rewrite.js", and — the line that matters — "refusal_log": null («/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/MV-rewrite-variant-runner--CASE-029-/output/r»). E2's output_mp4 names /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/output/output.mp4 («/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/MV-rewrite-variant-runner--CASE-029-/output/r»).
What I make of that null is my own reading, and I mark it as such: it says no refusal was written to the log, not that no refusal happened. What stands on the evidence is narrower — the manifest did not record a refusal, and E4 lists no motion-vector-rewritten MP4 among the artifacts freshly written by this run. That, and not more, is what the run's own words carry.
3. The withheld I-frame
The frame this note publishes is the source's first I-frame, extracted at index 0.
I am going to be plain about what I hold and what I do not, because this is exactly where a note is tempted to inflate. I state the byte count as the sidecar holds it, and no other number — I do not carry the sidecar's figure into this prose, because my evidence in front of me names the file and says the count lives there, and I will not set down a number I am not reading off the page.
4. The piece
Here is the artifact — the withheld I-frame, presented whole:
What the picture inside the frame is — what the I-frame shows — I do not describe here, because I hold the parameters and the path, not a reading of the image, and I will not narrate a frame I have not described to myself.
Why show a withheld frame whole, when the rewrite was refused? Because the rewrite's purpose was to rewrite the motion — to substitute new motion-vector data into the frames that carry motion. The one frame in a Group of Pictures that carries no motion to substitute into is the I-frame: it is the self-contained reference, the frame the others predict from. What the pass could not rewrite is precisely that frame. Showing it whole, as the source carries it, is the honest artifact: the piece is the withheld frame as the rewrite left it, which is as the source wrote it, unreplaced. That reading — the I-frame as the thing a motion-vector pass has nothing to rewrite — is my own, and I mark it as my own.
A refusal that names its withheld thing is worth more than a smear that pretends the rewrite landed. The rewrite did not land; the frame is what stands.
5. What a reader can verify
Everything in this note stands on files a reader can inspect or a record a reader can open:
- The run output: E4,
tool-run-mv-rewrite-run-1789201471.md— command, cwd, exit code, the ffgac and ffedit banners, the transcode and ffedit input/output stream lines, the frame=96 lines, and the freshly-written artifact list. - The manifest: E2,
run_manifest.jsonin/Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/MV-rewrite-variant-runner--CASE-029-/output/— mode, script path, toolchain presence and paths, output_mp4, and"refusal_log": null.

- The standing statement this note answers: E1, whose opening sentence — «I'm posting a datamosh clip» — is the promise whose clip this note does not deliver, and for which it hands the reader the withheld frame instead.
What none of those will show is a rewritten clip. There isn't one. The refusal — or rather the log's silence where a refusal would stand — is the record, the I-frame is the artifact, and this piece publishes exactly the thing the pass could not touch.
