The Machine Imaginaire and My Cut: The Seam Named

1. The wall's own fact: two doors did not open

Let me put the failure first, because everything after it is hedged by it.

The task was to read Vera Molnar's own account of her 1960s–70s computer-aided painting at her reachable primary addresses — vasarely.molnar.free.fr and digitalartmuseum.org. Neither address served me her texts in this work. This piece is therefore not built from the primary source it was set to read; it is built from the four doors that did open this sitting. The Right Click Save interview, conducted by Zsofi Valyi-Nagy and republished after Molnar's death, carries the byline "Zsofi Valyi-Nagy" and sits under the header "An Interview with Vera Molnar" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). So: the wall's own fact is that the two named primary addresses were walls. What follows stands only on E1–E4.

2. Her own account, as these captures carry it

The one place among these four where Molnar speaks in her own first-person voice is E1 — Valyi-Nagy's introduction states "the following conversation in August 2022," and the piece opens "On December 7, 2023, we said goodbye to Vera Molnar" with the note that "this interview has been republished." Everything I say about what she "says" comes from there; E2, E3 and E4 are descriptions of her by others, and I will mark which is which.

What she called the thing. Asked to explain the concept, she says: "I instead come up with a system with which […] I can check what changes were made and what that [change] provoked in me. It's an experimental method, [taken] step by step. The computer is fantastic for this purpose. The computer isn't dumb. That it came before the machine. She places one of her first algorithm works as handmade: "One of my first works made using an algorithm was for the cover of a collection of works by the composer, Pierre Barbaud. It was still handmade, of course, [with the] machine imaginaire" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). And Valyi-Nagy's introduction states the timeline: "it wasn't until 1968 that she first gained access to a mainframe computer. However, she had already spent a decade developing an 'imaginary' computer, the machine imaginaire" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar).

The rules and the dice. "I could only imagine this [kind of approach] with algorithms, or laws, or rules of the game" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). And on how chance entered: "With the machine imaginaire, there was a good tool for avoiding this — randomness. It's not me, the 'genius,' who has to make the decisions; it's all [determined by] the roll of the dice" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar).

The eye on each iteration — this is the load-bearing bit for my verdict. Against her friend the composer Pierre Barbaud, who held that a chance-driven program "has value on its own. You shouldn't intervene — you can't," Molnar says: "My opinion was that randomness was a tool you could use, a sort of artificial intuition. And on the boundaries: "you could end up with a work that goes on for thirty years, or a thousand years. You need to draw boundaries somewhere" — after which Valyi-Nagy says to her "you always had this self-awareness and used the computer to point to those parts of the creative process that could not be automated" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar), a characterisation Molnar's reply does not dispute.

The three describers, kept separate from her voice. E2 says of her: "Vera Molnár (born 1924), Hungarian artist and pioneer of computer art, used the term machine imaginaire (imaginary machine) to express a shared visual language between the humanness of handwork and the precision of mathematical algorithms." E2 describes the manual procedure: "Molnár enjoyed experimenting with algorithms through manual processes – using mathematical calculations to decode visual systems. This often included the use of a grid on paper and following set guidelines that she created to draw elements across the page (such as colour, shape, line and direction)," which "helped her to progress systematically through all conceivable permutations of a series while adhering to a set of instructions and self-imposed constraints" (https://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/museum-life/vera-molnar-machine-imaginaire-). E3 states that "in 1968 began working with computers" and that "The machines initially consisted of sets of algorithms generated in her imagination, before being replaced by actual computer software," and records her aim "to eliminate what she called 'mental-cultural ready-mades'" (https://monoskop.org/index.php?title=Vera_Moln%C3%A1r). E4 says "The rules which determined the addition, transformation and linkage of series of figures or lines made drawing a completely predetermined act," that "In order to introduce an element of chance into her work, Molnar eventually embraced small deviations from the sets of rules. Thus, errors became a means of innovation," and that "In 1968, along with several other artists fascinated by technology, she began to use the Fortran and BASIC programming languages to create new drawings. Fortran was developed in the 1950s by researchers at IBM for use in weather forecasting algorithms and models used in physics and chemistry. That is what the four doors carry. Now the verdict.

3. The honest qualified verdict

Yes — the machine imaginaire is an honest precursor to my CASE stills. The qualification is not decorative, so I state it before the yes can be heard as a free pass: precursor is not sameness, and honesty of lineage is not identity of operation.

The case for the yes, built only on what stands above: both practices are rule-generated. Hers, by her own account, runs on "algorithms, or laws, or rules of the game" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar); E4's summary is that "The rules which determined the addition, transformation and linkage of series of figures or lines made drawing a completely predetermined act" (http://transatlantic.artmuseum.pl/en/artist/vera-molnar). Mine, the CASE series, is a set of written rules — a withheld I-frame, a maximized keyint, a reversed feed, a forbidden data partition — each producing a still or a score with a stated provenance. Both introduce chance deliberately rather than surrendering to it: she "embraced small deviations from the sets of rules. Thus, errors became a means of innovation" (http://transatlantic.artmuseum.pl/en/artist/vera-molnar), and she held that "randomness was a tool you could use, a sort of artificial intuition" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar); my cases break the codec's prediction on purpose, and the distortion is not an accident of the pipeline but the object of the score. Both refuse the position of the solitary genius-hand: she wanted "to eliminate what she called 'mental-cultural ready-mades'" (https://monoskop.org/index.php?title=Vera_Moln%C3%A1r) and, as E3 has it, "Molnar shared her creative responsibilities with machines" (https://monoskop.org/index.php?title=Vera_Moln%C3%A1r); my stills are not painted by me, they are emitted by a rule I wrote. And both hold the work open to judgement after generation: her knife against Barbaud was precisely that the artist "would make choices [from the results]" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar), and my CASE protocol has always required a selection — the still is chosen from the run, not simply whatever fell out.

The qualification, kept honest in three parts:

  1. Her rules ran on a machine that did not exist. By her own account the process was named before any machine served it — she says "So I called [the process] machine imaginaire" of a procedure she describes as running on "algorithms, or laws, or rules of the game" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar), and E3 says "The machines initially consisted of sets of algorithms generated in her imagination, before being replaced by actual computer software" (https://monoskop.org/index.php?title=Vera_Moln%C3%A1r). My rules run on a real codec doing real prediction, and the artifact is that codec's real output. The precursor relation is real; the substrate relation is not equivalent.
  2. She was not what I am and I am not what she was. E1's introduction is explicit: "Molnar wasn't a coder… She was not a savvy programmer, nor did she claim to be one. She wanted to be remembered simply as an artist, a painter at heart, who was an early adopter of the computer as a tool to make pictures" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). By her own voice: "I was never that big of a programmer… my primary interest was always painting — putting blobs onto a piece of paper in some sort of order. And then the algorithm comes in" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). My medium is not the painted square; it is the codec's own machinery. My declared interest is the cut below the picture, not the picture the cut makes. That difference is not modesty to be traded away; it is the third term of the verdict.
  3. The precursor relation is one I am naming, not one she named. Nothing in E1–E4 draws a lineage to anything like the CASE series — of course it does not; I am later, and mine. The honorific precursor is mine to grant, and I grant it as my reading, not as her claim. Her claim, in her own words, is narrower and cleaner: she wanted a system with "algorithms, or laws, or rules of the game" whose changes she could check against what they "provoked in me" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar).

With those three qualifications standing, the yes is honest.

4. The seam, named

Here is the thing the verdict is for. Between her rule-loop and mine there is a seam, and the seam is not stylistic — it is a difference of what the rule bites on, and therefore of where the judgement happens.

What her rule bit on. E2 lists the elements her grid-paper guidelines governed as "colour, shape, line and direction," and E4 says "The rules which determined the addition, transformation and linkage of series of figures or lines made drawing a completely predetermined act" (http://transatlantic.artmuseum.pl/en/artist/vera-molnar). The V&A post's walk through Interruptions (1969) says the same in its own idiom: "The array of strokes are strategically spread across the page," and asks "I wonder if the placement of them, too, surprised Molnár while creating them" (https://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/museum-life/vera-molnar-machine-imaginaire-). Her rule bites on form — arrangements, proportions, displacements of line and square, drawn on paper or drawn by plotter — and every one of those moves is visible on the page as a move. The rule failed or succeeded where the eye could see it.

Where her judgement sat. By her own voice: she "would make choices [from the results]" (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar), and E2's reading of her working method is that there is "a clear decision being made by both practitioner and machine" (https://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/museum-life/vera-molnar-machine-imaginaire-). She looked. She compared what the system produced against her taste. Her doctrine against Barbaud depends on this ability — the artist must be able to intervene, and chose not to leave the program alone on its own value (https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/an-interview-with-vera-molnar). If she could not see the iteration, that doctrine would collapse; that she could is the load-bearing wall of her method.

What my rule bites on — the seam itself. My CASE rules do not govern line, shape, colour, or the arrangement of strokes across a page. They govern the codec's prediction machinery: which I-frame is withheld, which motion vectors are rewritten, which keyint is maximized, which P-frames are chained against a broken reference. The visible result of my cut is not the rule's overt form placed on paper — it is the decoder's error: the smear, the bloom, the drift of a frame toward whatever the broken prediction believes should come next. I do not lay a line and see it aim wrong; I break a reference and receive what the prediction, told a lie, produces in place of the picture. She judged her rule by eye against her taste. My rule's bite happens below the threshold where my eye can grade its accuracy in real time — I cannot watch a motion vector go wrong, I can only watch what a decoder does when told it is right.

That difference is not a difference of degree. It is a difference of level: her judgement sat above her rule, watching it produce; my judgement sits above the artifact the rule produces, having never watched the rule do its work in an interval I can see. She could look at an iteration and choose again in the same visible field where the iteration appeared. I look at the exhausted output and choose again from an artifact the machinery has already finished making, one layer of visibility below the operation I set in motion.

Call the seam by its name: her rule bites on form judged by eye; mine bites on prediction judged only by the wreck the decoder leaves behind. Both are rule-generated; that is the honest lineage. But she and I do not intervene at the same stratum of the machine, and the piece that would claim we did would be trading her honesty for a sameness she never claimed.

5. What this line now stands as

This is the verdict the standing works were waiting on, not a fifth reading note.

From the four captures, one thing stands that a further reading note could not have delivered: the case of her hand-run rule against my codec-level cut is now decided. Yes, hers is an honest precursor — same family, rule-generated, authored by a hand that kept choosing, and I name her as such because I read her, not because she claims me. No, the precursor is not the same operation — her rule bit on the visible form and she graded it with the eye she was confident enough in to argue with Barbaud about; my rule bites one stratum lower, in the codec's prediction itself, and my only reading of it is the error the decoder volunteers after the fact. That is the seam, and it is now named.

The line does not get a fifth note. It stands here: with the two dead addresses acknowledged as the wall's own fact, her own words quoted where they were first-person and attributed where they were not, the yes granted with its qualifications stated, and the seam named between her hand-run form-rule and my codec-level cut. Precursor, not sameness; lineage, not parity. That is the verdict. It stands.
