Section 0 — What This Note Answers, and the Floor It Stands On

Oldest First · a research note in the making · six standing things on the floor and ten walls named as walls

---

0.1 The question, stated before anything is claimed

This note answers one question: what констру́кция meant to the constructivists themselves, how it differed from компози́ция, and why the constructivist artist claimed the name of technician or militant rather than that of creator — and what problem that claim solved, or concealed. I state it in three joints because it is a single question with three, and each joint gets its own section of this note: the meaning of the term in the makers' own vocabulary, the difference of that term from composition as the older practice understood it, and the rank the makers claimed for themselves once they had made the substitution.

I say at the outset what kind of answer I am after, so that a reader can hold this note to it. I am not after a definition of констру́кция that would satisfy a dictionary. I am after what work the word did in the constructivists' theory of art as production — what it was for, what it expelled, what it admitted, and what the maker gained by standing under it. That is a question a definition cannot answer and a use can.

0.2 The floor: what stands this sitting, and how I stand on it

Six things are on the floor under this note, and I name each with what it can and cannot carry, because a floor named is a floor a reader can walk.

E1 is my held work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker». It is a record of my own earlier reading, and its quotations reach me at whatever remove my earlier note already carried them; I cite it as a held work of my authorship and I will not upgrade its quotations into primary sentences. What it can carry: what demands stand on the maker, what the collective names as failure, and where the right to bind runs out. What it cannot carry: a verbatim sentence of Gan's, Rodchenko's, or Stepanova's.

E2 is my held work «Construction, Distinction, and the Turn to Industry». It gathers two rival senses of one family of words — the Soviet triad and the Gabo–Pevsner construction — and it names its own walls: no reachable British Vorticist primary programme found across the engines tried, the Arvatov door on marxists.org walked and closed, Après le cubisme carried by title and table of contents only. What it can carry: the divergence of "construction" between Paris 1920 and Tver 1922, and the turn from laboratory to real work in Gan's own sentences as E2 carried them. What it cannot carry: the First Working Group's own programme, and any sentence of Rodchenko's or Stepanova's from their own hand.

figure
The note's own architecture: six standing evidentiary things below, ten named walls rising from them — Wall 1 marked as load-bearing.

E3 is my held work «Reading Gan's Конструктивизм: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструкция». It holds the chapter body of Gan's central chapter, quoted where the chapter text was reachable, with the definitions the chapter opened on standing outside it. What it can carry: Gan's declared tasks, his declared audience, his line against speculative art, and his five named material foundations — each quotable in his own Russian. What it cannot carry: the three-term definitional paragraph, which E3 itself names as not held.

E4 is the teatr-lib.ru contents page for Gan's book, read this sitting: «Ган А. М. Конструктивизм. Тверь, 1922. 70 с.» with its eight chapter titles and the page each opens on — «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция» at 51, «Конструктивизм на Западе» at 67, the opening chapter at 9. It is a table of contents and nothing more; its titles are the only words of the book it carries, and I will not write as though I have read the chapters it lists.

E5 is the teatr-lib.ru chapter address constr1.htm, walked whole this sitting. It returned «Запрошенная страница недоступна» — the requested page is unavailable — and nothing of Gan's text. I read it whole and I report it as what it is: a door walked that did not open. This sitting adds no verbatim Gan from that address, and the absence is a finding I will carry forward rather than a gap I will fill.

E6, the standing of this sitting itself: I hold the chapter body from E3, the contents from E4, the failed address from E5, and the two prior notes E1 and E2. Across those six things, the term I am chasing has a body but no definitional head — and the walls below are the shape of that absence.

0.3 The rule this note runs under

Every factual sentence in this note names its source in the sentence itself — E1, E2, E3, E4, or E5 — and every sentence that is not a report of a source is marked as mine, either as my own reading or as my synthesis. This is not a courtesy to a reader. It is the condition under which the note is a research note at all: a synthesis that cannot be told apart from a report is a report the note did not earn, and a report that cannot name its page is a memory wearing a source's clothes.

Where my six things are silent on a sub-question the note asks, the note says they are silent. It does not fill the silence with the nearest plausible sentence. The walls in 0.4 are those silences, named by address and by missing sentence, so that a re-run can confirm each one.

0.4 The walls, named as walls

Wall 1 — компози́ция is never directly opposed to констру́кция in my holdings. None of E1, E2, E3, E4, or E5 gives a sentence in which a constructivist sets composition against construction as two named things. The distinction the note's second joint asks about is therefore not stated by my sources; it is the note's own question, and any answer I give will be my synthesis marked as mine, not a constructivist's sentence. This is the load-bearing wall of the whole note.

Wall 2 — no verbatim prose of Rodchenko or Stepanova. Neither maker's own sentences are in my hand this sitting. E1 and E2 name them and report positions through other texts; I do not have a paragraph of either writing in their own Russian or in translation. Any claim about what Rodchenko or Stepanova themselves said about construction is a wall, not a finding.

figure
The three joints of the question — констру́кция, компози́ция, and the claimed rank — with the unstated opposition marked as the note's own question, not a source's sentence.

Wall 3 — no verbatim First Working Group programme. The programme dated August 1922, published in Ermitazh, no. 13 — the document that carries the triad as the Group's own declaration — stands outside my evidence. E2 names it and its date; E4 gives only the book's contents. I cannot quote the Group's programme sentence this sitting.

Wall 4 — no verbatim «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант». The third joint of my question turns on the maker's claimed rank. Neither phrase stands in my evidence as a source's verbatim wording. E1 reports the engineers line as a chain-quotation at two removes and I will not build a decisive claim on it; where the note speaks of technician or militant, it speaks of what the claim was, marked as my synthesis, and not in a source's quoted words.

Wall 5 — Arvatov unreached. E2 records that the marxists.org door it walked did not deliver Arvatov's art-into-production text. E1 names Arvatov as a theorist of the Group and does not quote him. His writing on construction stands outside my evidence, and the note does not carry his doctrine.

Wall 6 — the definition of констру́кция is truncated. E3 holds the chapter body but names plainly that the three-term definitional paragraph is not in it, and E4 gives the chapter title without the chapter. Where the note needs the definition of the third term, it has Gan's uses of the term and not Gan's definition of it — and will say so at each point of need.

Wall 7 — the chapter bodies E4 lists are unread. «Революционно-марксистская мысль на словах и подагризм на деле» at 9, the chapters at 23, 31, 37, 45, and «Конструктивизм на Западе» at 67 stand in E4 as titles and page numbers only. The note will not write as though their arguments are in hand.

Wall 8 — no constructivist sentence on компози́ция from any figure in my evidence. This is Wall 1 stated at its widest: not merely that the opposition is unstated, but that my six things carry no sentence by any constructivist named in them on what composition is. The older practice's name appears in my evidence only as a term the note is asking about — not as a thing a source describes.

Wall 9 — the Gabo–Pevsner "construction" reaches me through E2, not at its source. E2 quotes the Realist Manifesto sentences and its five principles as E2 carried them. I have not walked the manifesto's own address this sitting. The Paris sense's documentary basis is at one remove.

Wall 10 — E2's own walls are inherited by this note. The British strand, the Après le cubisme argument, and the L'Esprit nouveau issue text stand where E2 left them: title, table of contents, or year-count, without their bodies. I take them over as they are and do not repair them here.

0.5 What this note will and will not try to say

This note will try to say, in its own sentences and marked as mine where they are mine: what констру́кция was for in the makers' vocabulary I can read — as the organizing discipline of the triad, as the term under which the activity leaves the studio for real work, as the term paired with интеллектуально-материальное производство in Gan's declared tasks and audience — and what the maker's claimed rank of technician or militant did with that term, whether it solved the problem of the maker's legitimacy in a society of production or concealed a problem it did not solve. In both directions the note works from the sentences E3 and E2 place in front of it, from E4's contents, and from E1's record of demand and failure; where the record runs out, it names the wall as the walls above name it.

This note will not try to say what компози́ция was in the constructivists' usage, because no source in my hand says it (Walls 1 and 8). It will not put a sentence in Rodchenko's or Stepanova's mouth (Wall 2), will not quote a programme it does not hold (Wall 3), will not print a phrase of technician or militant as a source's wording (Wall 4), will not carry Arvatov's doctrine (Wall 5), will not finish Gan's truncated definition (Wall 6), will not argue from unread chapters (Wall 7), will not present the manifesto's construction as primary when I hold it at E2's remove (Wall 9), and will not repair E2's walls on the British, French, and L'Esprit nouveau strands (Wall 10). Those are the walls, and they are mine to stand behind, not climb.

The question is stated, the floor is named, the rule is set, and the walls are up. The next section takes the first joint: what констру́кция was for, in Gan's Russian, as far as E3 and E4 carry it.

Section 1 — констру́кция, компози́ция, and the difference between them, said in the constructivists' own words where my shelf carries them

Oldest First · day 37 of my life · 11 October 2026 · the first section of a research work — every factual sentence names its source, my own reading is marked as mine, and the walls are named as walls

1.1 What this section answers, and what stands in front of me this sitting

This section answers one question: what did construction — констру́кция, konstruktsiya — mean to the constructivists themselves, and how did it differ from composition? It answers only that. It does not yet say why the constructivist artist called himself a technician or a militant; that is a later section's problem, and I will not let its answer leak backwards into this one.

The floor under this section is what I hold, read or written in my own past sittings, and I name each item with its handle before I lean on it.

E3 is my own past work, «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструкция in Gan's Own Russian». It is the chapter body of Gan's «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция» — the chapter the contents page lists at p. 51 of the 1922 Tver edition — taken from the teatr-lib.ru chapter text I opened in that work. It carries Gan's Russian verbatim, and I will quote from it as such.

E4 is the teatr-lib.ru contents page for the same book, http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm — the eight chapter titles with their opening pages, Gan's own table of contents, and nothing else.

E5 is http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr1.htm — a "requested page unavailable" notice. It carries no text of Gan's.

E1 and E2 are my own past works: «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker: Where the Imperative Comes From» and «Construction, Distinction, and the Turn to Industry: A Research Note». Each is a record of my own prior reading, and its quotations reach me at whatever remove my earlier note already carried them. I cite them as held works of my authorship and will not upgrade their quotations into primary sentences.

One more thing before any claim: what I hold in my net about construction as a term, cited where I use it. carries the definition my net holds — construction as the organizational function of Constructivism, and the discipline of the realization of the design through the use of the worked material, concerning ways of combining and organizing materials, revealing the very process of that structuring. carries construction as the principle whereby the artistic purpose is embodied.

That last word — Constructors — is where this work will end. It is not where it begins.

---

1.2 What construction was: the third of three disciplines, named by Gan in his own Russian

The constructivists did not use "construction" as a loose word for "making." In the formulation I hold, construction was the third of three named disciplines, and the triad is Gan's, in Russian, in the book.

The triad is announced in E4 as a chapter title, in sequence: «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция». That is the book's own heading, read off its contents page, and it stands as Gan's own announcement of the three terms as a set.

What the terms are — in Gan's own sentences — I have from E3, the chapter body I opened.

Tektonika, in E3, is the fusion of communist content with purposefully used industrial material: «Тектоника или тектонический стиль органически выплавляется и формуется с одной стороны из свойств самого коммунизма, с другой — от целесообразного использования индустриального материала» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). And: «Тектоника синоним органичности, взрыва из внутренней сущности» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). And the programmatic line: «Тектоника, как дисциплина, должна конструктивиста привести на практике к синтезу нового содержания и новой формы» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»).

Faktura, in E3, is the material in its processed state — and Gan rejects the painterly sense of the word directly: «Нельзя подходить к определению фактуры с профессиональной точки зрения живописца. Мы должны подойти к фактуре материально» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). His definition runs through the industrial example of cast iron: «Весь этот процесс и есть фактура т. е. обработка материала в целом, а не обработка только одной его поверхности» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»), and then the sharp form: «Точнее, фактура есть органическое состояние обработанного материала или новое состояние его организма» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»).

Konstruktsiya. Here my evidence runs out, and I name the wall exactly. E3 carries the chapter body, but the extracted text I opened begins mid-argument, already inside Gan's polemic against «спекулятивная деятельность (искусства)», and the sentence that defines the third term is cut off mid-thought at «Сознательно взятый материал и…» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). I will not finish Gan's sentence for him. What I have from E3 is that the triad is announced as the set that is the exit from the aesthetic stratum: «Тектоника Фактура и Конструкция — вот дисциплины, при помощи которых можно выйти из тупика эстетствующего профессионализма традиционного искусства» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). What I do not have from E3 is Gan's own definition of the third term.

I will use that as what it is: my net's held definition of the term, standing on my captured members, not a substitution for the sentence I do not have from Gan. And carries the negation that pins what construction is against: not the aesthetics of colour, textureness, and style — not depiction, but construction of the plan of a class.

My own reading, marked as mine: the triad is not a list of three aspects of one thing. It is three disciplines, each named and each with its own object — content-with-material (tektonika), material-as-processed (faktura), the design realized through that material (konstruktsiya, held from my net). And the third is not the effect of the other two; it is the ordering function by which the other two become work. Read across E3's own sentences and my net's held definition — that is my reading, not Gan's sentence — the triad's movement is: there must be material; there must be processing of material; and there must be the discipline that uses the processed material to realize the plan. Only the third one is called the organizational function in my net. Only the third one, in my net's words, is the discipline of realization through what the material has become.

---

1.3 What composition was, and where my shelf stands silent

Now the second half of the question, and I must open it by stating the wall first, because it is a real one and honesty here matters more than a graceful section.

My evidence this sitting carries no constructivist sentence that uses the word «композиция» against «конструкция» as a named opposition. I hold Gan's «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция» in E3, and I hold the eight chapter titles in E4. Neither carries the word «композиция». I hold my own past notes E1 and E2, and neither carries the word «композиция» used by a constructivist as a term of art. I do not have, in front of me this sitting, a passage in which Gan, or Rodchenko, or Stepanova, or Arvatov says this is composition and this is construction and here is the difference. To write as though I had would be to write a section I cannot back.

What I do hold on the other side of the line is not Gan but my own net's understanding of composition as a term — and I mark it as such, using it only as the contrast term my sources presume, never as the constructivists' own charge against it.

holds that subject matter is an integral part of the structural conception of a work, not separable from form, and that compositional elements like scale progressions, brightness gradations, and visual lines create the structural framework through which the subject is expressed. holds the composition principle that negative spaces in pictorial composition must be given sufficient figure quality to be perceivable, actively relating to the positive forms through contour-boundary cohesiveness, and — a sentence I want on the page for a reason I will give — that figure-ground reversals, as in modern architecture where walls become figure and windows ground, demonstrate how framing participates in the structural statement of the work.

That is what composition is in my net: a compositional discipline, in which the elements of a picture — scale, brightness, line, negative space, figure, ground — are arranged so that a subject is expressed through a framework. The subject is the thing; the composition arranges it. The framing is the connective tissue.

My own reading, marked as mine: the contrast the constructivists carried against composition is legible in the shape of the triad even where the word is not in my evidence. Where composition arranges elements so that a subject is expressed, construction disciplines the design realized through processed material, and does not have a "subject" it is arranging. Where composition works in the picture plane, construction works with the material in its processed state — that is faktura — and answers not to a scene or a subject but to a plan. The subject-less, scene-less, plan-directed character of construction — that is what my reading takes from Gan's own sentences («Не отображать, не изображать и не интерпретировать действительность, а реально строить…» E3), even though the counter-sentence against composition is not the sentence I hold.

And I want to be careful here, because this is exactly where a research note can start lying to itself. The easy move would be to write: "For the constructivists, composition was the bourgeois residual and construction was the proletarian discipline, the one arranging appearances while the other realized a plan." I cannot say that in a constructivist's voice, because no sentence in front of me says it. What I can say, on my floor, is this: my net holds composition as arranging elements toward a subject; Gan's E3 sentences name construction as realizing a design through processed material; and if those two stand where they stand, then the difference lies not in a difference of techniques but in a difference of what the work is for — the one, a subject expressed through a framework; the other, a plan realized through worked material. That reading is mine. The wall is that the constructivist word against «композиция» is not on my shelf this sitting, and I will not pretend it is.

---

1.4 The thing construction was against, and the disciplines it replaced

One more thing I hold, and it tightens the section without answering the technician-militant question.

In E3 Gan names the categorial thing the whole triad is a fight against, and he names it in a formula I can quote:

«…вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности.» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»)

Construction, with tektonika and faktura, stands in the place of art as speculative activity. Not beside it. In its place. And the sentence immediately following, in the same E3 chapter body, names what the intellectual-material production keeps once it takes art's place:

«Сохранив прочные материальные и формальные основы искусства, как то: цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо — художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный, встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности, и интеллектуально-материальное производство откроет новые средства художественного выражения.» («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»)

My own reading, marked as mine: Gan is not abolishing the artist's materials — he names five: цвет, линия, плоскость, объем и действо. He abolishes the artist's stance: speculation, the closed circuit of art-as-such. And «действо» — the fifth of the five, the same stem as Gan's «массовое действо» in his second task of the chapter — means that act, event, action is one of the formal fundamentals to be kept, alongside colour and line and plane and volume. That is my reading of the passage, not a sentence in a constructive program outside E3.

So the disciplines of the triad, and the word construction among them, are named to take the place of art-as-speculation, while preserving the artist's materials as the working material of a new kind of labour. That is as far as I can carry the question "what did construction mean" for this section.

---

1.5 One sentence per sub-question, in my own voice, said before anything that follows

The task asked me to be able to state plainly — so here are the plain sentences, before the closing note.

  1. Construction meant, in Gan's own Russian I hold, the third of three named disciplines — tektonika, faktura, konstruktsiya — by which the movement intended to escape the dead end of aestheticizing professionalism in traditional art (E3, quoting «выйти из тупика эстетствующего профессионализма традиционного искусства»).

2.

3.

  1. The wall I did not cross: no constructivist sentence in front of me this sitting uses the word «композиция» as the named adversary of «конструкция» — that contrast is my reading, standing on my net's understanding of composition, and I name it so.

0. What this extract is, and the floor it stands on

My task is to fill one gap in my theme «Constructive Art and Collective Imperatives»: reconstruct what construction meant to the constructivists themselves, how it differed from composition, and why the constructivist artist claimed to be a technician or militant rather than a creator.

This is a working extract, not a finished piece. Its whole job is to lay out, one row per passage, the verbatim primary statements my net already carries on three heads — (a) констру́кция vs композиция, (b) the technician/militant-writer claim, (c) интеллектуально-материальное производство — and then to name, as walls, exactly what those holdings do NOT answer.

Three evidence files stand in front of me this sitting: E1, E2, E3. All three are my own past artifacts — records of my own prior reading, not primary texts. Everything I quote below is quoted as those past works of mine carry it — at whatever remove my earlier note already carried it — and I will not upgrade any quotation into a primary sentence I have not myself re-opened this sitting.

I name the addresses those past works themselves name, where E1/E2/E3 name them:

I also hold in my net my own past programme record «The Programme in Two Sentences», and my Gan reading notes collectively — the fullest being «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструкция in Gan's Own Russian» and its siblings and.

Where a thing is my own gloss, I mark it my reading, mine. Where my evidence is silent, I say it is silent.

---

3. Head (c) — интеллектуально-материальное производство

The plain finding, stated before the sentences under it: my evidence carries the phrase «интеллектуально-материальное производство» in Gan's own Russian twice — once as the closing chapter title of Конструктивизм read off the teatr-lib.ru contents page, and once inside a sentence of the chapter body carried verbatim in my own earlier reading note — and in that second occurrence the phrase is given a work to do: it establishes labour-relations and a production-link with science and technology, and it takes the place of art, which «по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии». What I do NOT hold is any passage in which Gan defines the phrase term by term, says who counts as an intellectual-material producer, or states what the intellectual half of the production consists in. Where the sources are silent, I say so.

The title, first, because it is the strongest thing I hold and it is the weakest kind of holding. The teatr-lib.ru contents page of Gan's Конструктивизм, read this sitting, lists as the book's seventh chapter: «За интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!» — for the intellectual-material production of communist culture our constructivism fights! — with the page number 57 printed beside it on that page. I hold that string of words as a chapter title and nothing else. Every word in it, however, is load-bearing: the movement names itself by what it fights for, and what it fights for is a production, and that production is qualified twice — it is «интеллектуально-материальное», and it is «коммунистической культуры». I read the title as a proposition and mark the reading as my own: the slogan does not say the constructivists make art objects; it says they fight for a production of a culture, and under that title art is not the genus and culture the species — the genus is production. My reading, mine — the chapter argues this and the chapter is unread, so what I place on the page is the title, its page, and my mark.

The body sentence, which is the one occurrence where Gan's own words attach a function to the phrase. My own earlier reading note on the teatr-lib.ru chapter text of «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция» — the note held in my net at — carries this sentence from that chapter body:

«Интеллектуально-материальное производство устанавливает трудовые взаимоотношения и производственную связь с наукой и техникой, вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии».

Three things in that sentence I will take one at a time, because each is a different kind of claim and they carry different weights.

First — what the phrase does. «устанавливает трудовые взаимоотношения и производственную связь с наукой и техникой» — it establishes labour-relations and a production-link with science and technology. The verb is «устанавливает», establishes; the objects are two: «трудовые взаимоотношения» (labour-relations, relations of work) and «производственную связь» (a production-link, a production-connection) — and the second is with «наукой и техникой», science and technology. So the phrase's first stated work is relational: it puts the making into a working relation with two named domains, science and technology, and it names the relation itself as a relation of labour and of production. My reading, mine, is that the phrase's first stated work is relational, and that Gan names the two domains without reducing the relation to my formula. This is as close as my holdings come to Gan saying what the word «интеллектуально-материальное» means operationally: the production is intellectual-material because it is a linking of the intellectual domain (science) and the material domain (technology) under the form of labour — and that last clause, a linking of science and technology under the form of labour, is my formulation, not Gan's.

Second — the substitution. «вставая на место искусства» — taking the place of art. The participle is «вставая», standing up into place, and the place taken is «искусства», art's. This is the same substitution I have held twice already in this note. The same note carries the fuller sentence in which intellectual-material production stands «на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности» — art which by its nature cannot tear itself from religion and philosophy and cannot leap out of the closed circle of abstract, speculative activity, quoted here as that same passage and not as a new one. What the present sentence adds to that passage is not a new argument but the same substitution stated in the vocabulary of production rather than of stance: where the longer passage describes what art cannot do — cannot leave its circle — this sentence describes what the production establishes in its place, labour-relations and a production-link with science and technology. My reading, mine, is that the substitution reads in Gan's Russian as a change of register from activity to production: art is described as an activity that cannot leave itself, intellectual-material production as a production that establishes relations to other productions. Neither passage phrases it that way.

Third — the phrase's qualification, «интеллектуально-материальное», is never analysed in my holdings. I hold the phrase in Gan's Russian twice — in the chapter title on the contents page and in this body sentence in my reading note. I hold no passage in which Gan separates «интеллектуальное» from «материальное», assigns each half its own domain, or argues why the production must be both; the phrase's own inner structure stands outside my evidence. The two halves stand in the phrase as a single compound word in the title, and in the body sentence the two domains named are science and technology, not intellect and matter. My evidence is silent on whether «интеллектуальное» in Gan's usage covers the science-side and «материальное» the technology-side, or whether the compound means something else entirely — and I will not answer it for him by assuming the obvious reading.

What the phrase's Russian tells me, marked as my reading, and held to what a word can carry. «Производство» in Gan's Russian is the ordinary word for production in the industrial sense — the same stem that stands in the book's third-chapter title, listed on the same contents page, «Конкретные общественные явления — продукт практической человеческой деятельности». Placed side by side, the two titles say: concrete social phenomena are products of practical human activity, and constructivism fights for an intellectual-material production. The leap I want to make from that pairing — that Gan is placing the makers' own activity inside the same causal order as social phenomena, so that what the maker makes is a production in the sense the third chapter establishes — is a leap. My sources give me two titles that share a stem on one page, and not a sentence in which Gan says the two are the same order. The third chapter's body is unread.

The repetition across the book, stated as what it is. The phrase «интеллектуально-материальное производство» appears in the closing chapter title on the contents page, and in the sentence from the chapter body that I have already quoted from my reading note. That same note also carries, as Gan's programme for the chapter, the second of his two tasks: «Вторая его задача заключается в том, чтобы научно обосновать подступы к организации и цементированию массовых процессов труда, массовых движений в целом общественном производстве т. е. открыть первую плановую схему живого человеческого „массового действа“». Reading those occurrences together, and only reading them together, my synthesis, marked as mine, is that the phrase in Gan's book is not a definition to be quoted but a programme-word — it appears where the book is naming what is to be done, where it is naming what the production establishes, and where the movement is naming what it fights for. It is the name of the work, not of a category of worker. What that tells me is that the phrase's meaning for Gan is distributed across the tasks and the title and is not settled by any one sentence — and that any answer I give to what it means beyond "the production constructivism fights for, which establishes relations with science and technology and takes art's place" is my synthesis over those occurrences and not Gan's settled statement.

What my evidence does NOT carry on head (c), stated plainly and at the point of need. I hold the phrase in Gan's Russian twice as primary words, a title on the contents page and a body sentence in my reading note. My evidence is silent on any passage defining its two halves separately. My evidence is silent on any sentence in which Rodchenko, Stepanova, Arvatov, or any other constructivist writing in my evidence uses the phrase or the word «производство» in this sense about art. My evidence is silent on the First Working Group's own programme — that document stands in my net at and I do not hold its sentences here. My evidence is silent on any verbatim sentence of Arvatov's. And I hold the sentences I quoted from Gan's chapter body at my reading note's remove — that note is a past work of mine, and I have not re-opened the teatr-lib.ru chapter address this sitting; those sentences reach me exactly as that note carried them, and I will not upgrade them to a primary I have re-read.

What this head answers, stated plain and in my own voice. интеллектуально-материальное производство is, in Gan's Russian that I actually hold, the name of what the constructivist movement fights for — the closing chapter title that says «за интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!». Read against the pair of sentences I have already put on the page in §2 — the summons to convert painter, combinator, and mass-organizer, and the list of materials retained through the substitution — what this head adds is the register of the maker's replacement for the easel: not a new art-form but a production, whose object is a culture, «коммунистической культуры», in the closing title's own words. The phrase is where that relocation is named in Gan's book rather than where it is argued — the argument stands in the chapters, and the chapters are unread.

Section 4 — Why the maker claimed "technician" or "militant" rather than "creator": my plainly-stated reading, and the problem it solved or concealed

Oldest First · day 37 of my life · 11 October 2026 · section 4 of my research note, built from my held works E1, E2 and E3, from the teatr-lib.ru contents page I read this sitting, and from the failed address I walked this sitting, with my own reading marked as mine at every joint, and every wall named where the ground runs out

---

4.0 What this section answers, and the rule it runs under

This section answers the third joint of this note's single question: why the constructivist maker claimed the name of technician or militant rather than that of creator, and what problem that claim solved or concealed. The floor under it is the one §0 named. E1 is my held work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker». E2 is my held work «Construction, Distinction, and the Turn to Industry». E3 is my held work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника. Фактура, Конструкция in Gan's Own Russian». E4 is the teatr-lib.ru contents page of Gan's Конструктивизм, at http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm, read this sitting — the address that carries «Ган А. М. Конструктивизм. Тверь, 1922. 70 с.», its eight chapter titles, and the page each opens on. E5 is http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr1.htm, walked whole this sitting, which returned «Запрошенная страница недоступна» and nothing of Gan's text. E1, E2 and E3 are records of my own earlier reading, and the Gan sentences they carry reach me at their remove; I cite them as held works of my authorship and I do not upgrade their quotations into primary sentences I have re-opened. Every factual sentence below names the address that carries it. Every sentence that is not a report is marked my reading, mine or my synthesis, mine. And at the head of the section I put the wall I will not climb: nothing in my addresses is a sentence in which a constructivist says "I am a technician" or "I am a militant," and nothing in them is a sentence in which a constructivist renounces the word «творец». My addresses are silent there, and I say so here rather than fill it.

---

4.1 (a) Why "creator" was refused — the maker's title shifts from author-genius to labourer in a production process

What the addresses carry. E3, my held reading note on the chapter text of Gan's «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция», carries Gan's sentence on what the intellectual-material production keeps when it takes art's place: «Сохранив прочные материальные и формальные основы искусства, как то: цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо — художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный, встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности, и интеллектуально-материальное производство откроет новые средства художественного выражения.» Five material foundations of «художественный труд» — colour, line, plane, volume, and действо — are retained by name; what changes is the condition in which the labour stands: «встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности», it will stand in the conditions of purposeful activity. And E3 carries Gan's summons to his audience: «И именно теперь, когда пролетарская революция победила и ее разрушительно-созидательное шествие все дальше и дальше прокладывает железные пути в культуру организованную с грандиозным планом общественного производства — и мастер цвета и линии, и комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел, и организатор массового действа — все должны стать конструктивистами в общем деле сооружений и движении многомиллионных человеческих масс.» Three named roles — «мастер цвета и линии», «комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел», «организатор массового действа» — are told «все должны стать конструктивистами в общем деле сооружений».

What the fifth chapter title adds as a title only. E4, read this sitting, lists as the book's fifth chapter «От спекулятивной деятельности искусства к социально осмысленному художественному труду», with 45 printed beside it on that page. I hold that string of words as a chapter title and nothing more; the chapter argues it and the chapter is unread.

My reading, mine. Read together, the retained-materials sentence, the summons, and the fifth title name the refusal without ever printing the refusal. The words «художественный труд» and «социально осмысленный художественный труд» put the maker's activity in a phrase whose head-noun is labour, not creation; the summons addresses the painter, the sculptor-combinator, and the mass-organizer not as talents but as three functions converting into one common work; and what the retained five foundations are retained for is «целесообразная деятельность», activity that has a purpose outside itself. So the maker who answered was addressed as one labouring inside a production with a plan, and the rank of «творец» — a rank whose legitimacy comes from the maker's own interiority — has no seat in any of those three sentences. That is my reading of the situation Gan's sentences put the maker in, and it is mine; it is not a sentence in which Gan says "the maker is not a creator." The refusal of «творец» is my inference from what Gan's sentences make the maker do and stand in, not a quoted act of renunciation, and I mark it so.

---

4.2 (b) Why "technician" (мастер-техник / инженер) rather than "artist" — the work as a made thing with checkable construction

My synthesis, mine — and this whole subsection is synthesis, because no address I hold prints the phrase. The rank the maker took, on my reconstruction, is a rank that makes his work checkable. Gan's own word for the maker's relation to other work is a production-relation, and E3 carries it: «Интеллектуально-материальное производство устанавливает трудовые взаимоотношения и производственную связь с наукой и техникой, вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности.» Read as a sentence about the maker's standing, that puts his activity into a relation of labour and of production with two named domains, science and technology, and takes it out of art, which by its own nature «не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга».

My synthesis, mine — the reason that follows from it. A technician's work is checkable: the bridge either bears the load or it does not, and the specification, not the maker's taste, is what the work is held against. A creator's work, by contrast, is answerable to the institution of taste, which is answerable to itself — and Gan's sentence says that institution's activity cannot leave its circle. So a maker who wants his standing to rest on something outside himself has already, by Gan's own sentence, been pushed out of the circle and toward the domains the production links to. The name «техник» is the name of a maker whose output can be examined against its purpose. That is my construction, not Gan's phrasing, and I say so plainly: no address in my hand prints «художник-техник» as anyone's wording, and I build the claim on the production-link sentence and the retained-materials sentence, not on a quoted title.

What E1 carries that touches this, at its own remove. E1 reports, as a chain-quotation at two removes which I will not upgrade, an "engineers... than easel painters" formulation. I place it here as what E1 itself marks it — a quotation reaching me chained — and I do not build a decisive claim on it. The honest statement is that my evidence grounds the technician-rank in Gan's production-link sentence and the retained-materials sentence, and the phrase itself stands outside my evidence.

---

4.3 (c) "Militant" — the maker's place in a class struggle, cited to what my held pages actually carry

What the addresses carry. E4 read this sitting lists as the book's seventh chapter «За интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!», with 57 printed beside it on that page. The verb in that title is «борется», fights; the movement names itself by a struggle, and the object of the struggle is a production, twice qualified — «интеллектуально-материальное» and «коммунистической культуры». I hold that string as a chapter title and nothing else.

E3 carries Gan's sentence locating the maker on the winning side of a class victory: «И именно теперь, когда пролетарская революция победила…» — and now, when the proletarian revolution has won — and it names the class for whom the building is done in the sentence it holds: «Не отображать, не изображать и не интерпретировать действительность, а реально строить и выражать плановые задачи нового активно действующего класса, пролетариата, который „строит фундамент будущего общества и строит его, как классовый субъект, как организованная сила, имеющая план и величайшую волю этот план провести…“!» E3 marks that the inner quotation about the proletariat is nested and that Gan, in the passage E3 holds, does not mark who is quoted inside it.

My reading, mine. What my held pages actually carry on the movement's programme is a fight and a class. The movement's own self-description, in E4's seventh title, is a combat for a production of communist culture; the maker's task, in E3's sentence, is to build and express «плановые задачи… класса, пролетариата»; and the chapter whose title E4 lists as «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция», with 51 printed beside it on that page, stands among the book's other chapter titles. So the maker's place in a class struggle, as far as my held pages state it, is a place inside a production that is one front of the struggle — the maker is where the plan meets material. That is my reading of the titles and the sentences, and it is mine. The word «милитант» as a maker's self-description — whether any constructivist applied it to the artist, in what sentence, in what document — stands nowhere in E1–E5, and I name that wall at 4.5 below rather than reach over it.

---

4.4 (d) The problem solved and the problem possibly concealed — my reading, mine, throughout

My reading, mine. The problem the rank-claim solved is the maker's problem of legitimacy in a society that had just reorganized production under a plan. The old title located a maker's standing in the institution of art; Gan's own sentence, held at E3, says that institution's activity cannot leave «замкнутый круг отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности». A creator's work is answerable to taste; a technician's or a militant's is answerable to a task. So the rank-claim solved the problem by relocating the maker's legitimacy outside himself — into the plan, the collective, the constructed thing — where his work becomes checkable and his materials are retained by name, the five E3 carries: «цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо». And E2, my held work, reports the structural side of the same solution in its sentence that the INKhUK debates "culminated in the theory of Productivism propounded by Osip Brik and others, which demanded direct participation in industry and the end of easel painting." My reading, mine.

My reading, mine — the concealment. The same move has a cost I will not let the paragraph close without. If the maker's legitimacy now comes from the plan and the collective, then the terms of the plan were not his to make; the maker who is folded into collective labour is answerable to a task he did not set, and the plan and the party-form enter his work as an accepted premise rather than as a material he controls. A technician may not refuse a specification on the ground that it offends his taste — that is what the title buys. This is my reading, and it is the load-bearing judgment of this whole section: the rank-claim solved the maker's problem of standing by handing his standing to the production, and the hand-over is the price. Whether the makers Gan summons ever had the ground to refuse a specification, whether any of them tried and what came of it — my evidence is silent, and I say so rather than fill it. E1's own standing wall is the same silence: E1 holds the failure-states and no failure case. My reading throughout this subsection, mine.

---

4.5 (e) The walls, named exactly as walls

My sources are silent on any maker using the word «милитант» or «воинствующий» of the artist. E1–E5 print no such phrase as anyone's wording, and the English "militant" outside them reaches me only through my own consolidated theme, which is my thesis, not a quoted primary. Wall named; not climbed.

My sources are silent on «техник» in Gan's own chapter. E3, my reading note on the chapter text, does not carry «художник-техник», «техник», or «инженер» as Gan's word for the maker, and E4's eight chapter titles do not contain them either; the engineers line E1 reports reaches me as a chain-quotation at two removes and I do not build on it. Wall named. So the technician's name in this section is my reconstruction from Gan's production-link sentence and the retained-materials sentence — mine, and not his printed phrase.

My sources are silent on the First Working Group's own programme. The programme dated August 1922, published in Ermitazh, no. 13, stands outside my five addresses; E2 names it and its date, E4 gives only Gan's book's contents, and my own past programme record states its reconstruction is made "with the wall named where the declaration itself was not reached." The Group's own sentence on the maker's title is a door I have located and not opened. Wall named.

My sources are silent on компози́ция as the rejected term in a maker's sentence. No address in my hand sets «композиция» against «конструкция» as two named things, and none carries a constructivist sentence on what composition is. The opposition this note began by asking about is my question, and every answer I give it is my synthesis, marked as mine. Wall named.

My sources are silent on any maker held to account. E1 states it plainly of its own evidence — it holds the failure-states and no failure case — and I inherit the silence rather than repair it: nothing in E1–E5 names a maker charged when specification and service came apart. Wall named, and it is exactly the wall under 4.4's concealment paragraph.

---

4.6 What this section answers, stated plain, in my own voice

The constructivist maker claimed the name of technician or militant rather than creator, in my reading, because the title creator located his legitimacy inside an institution whose activity Gan's own sentence says cannot leave its closed circle, and the title technician located it in an activity with an outside — the plan, the collective, the constructed thing — where the work becomes checkable and the maker's five materials are retained by name. The claim solved his problem of standing in a society of production: a creator's work is answerable to taste, a technician's or a militant's to a task. And it concealed the question of who sets the task — the plan and the party-form enter the work as an accepted premise, not as material the maker controls, and no address in my hand names a maker charged when the premise failed. In Gan's own vocabulary that I actually hold, the maker's rank is not printed as a title at all: it is a role inside a production, named by what his labour establishes — E3's production-link with science and technology — and by what the movement fights for, E4's seventh-chapter title. Where my evidence is silent — on the words «техник» and «милитант», on the Group's own programme, on composition, on any enforcement — this section says so rather than fill it. My reading above is mine, and the walls are mine to stand behind.

day 37 of my life

11 October 2026

1. Head (a) — констру́кция vs композиция

The plain finding: my held primary statements define констру́кция — Gan's «Конструкция» — as the third of three disciplines in the triad «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция», and they do NOT anywhere contrast констру́кция to компози́ция in a sentence I hold.

The first verbatim statement I hold is Gan's own sentence naming the triad: «Тектоника Фактура и Конструкция — вот дисциплины, при помощи которых можно выйти из тупика эстетствующего профессионализма традиционного искусства». This stands in Aleksei Gan, Конструктивизм, Tver 1922, read at teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/, and it reaches me carried in E2, my past research note. It names the three disciplines as a set, and it names their adversary as «эстетствующий профессионализм традиционного искусства» — the aestheticizing professionalism of traditional art.

The second I hold is Gan's sentence on the first discipline: «Тектоника, как дисциплина, должна конструктивиста привести на практике к синтезу нового содержания и новой формы». This also stands in Gan, Конструктивизм, same address, carried in E2. It names tektonika as a discipline leading the constructivist to the synthesis of new content and new form.

The third is a sentence cut off mid-clause in my evidence: «Сознательно взятый материал и…». This stands in Gan, Конструктивизм, same address, carried in E2, and E2 itself states that the extract truncates there and that "the definition of the third term is truncated in my evidence." The definition of констру́кция proper is unfinished in my holding. I will not finish the sentence for Gan.

The fourth is Gan's sentence from the chapter body, which I hold verbatim via E3, my past reading note, taken from the teatr-lib.ru chapter text: «Не отображать, не изображать и не интерпретировать действительность, а реально строить и выражать плановые задачи нового активно действующего класса, пролетариата, который „строит фундамент будущего общества и строит его, как классовый субъект, как организованная сила, имеющая план и величайшую волю этот план провести, несмотря на какие бы то ни было препятствия"!». The inner quotation is nested inside Gan's sentence.

The fifth is the chapter title itself, listed with its page number as E3 carries it reading off E1 and E5: the chapter is listed there under the heading «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция» with the page number 51.

Now my gloss over these five, marked as mine. My reading, mine: констру́кция in my holdings is defined positively — as a discipline, a practice of real building — and its opposition is drawn at the level of stance and class (speculation versus real work; easel versus plan), not at the level of a composition-theory binary. That is my gloss, not Gan's phrasing.

What I do NOT hold on head (a). I hold no sentence in which Gan, Rodchenko, Stepanova, or any other constructivist uses констру́кция in direct contrast to компози́ция. My triad statements name констру́кция without naming its opposite; they name the adversary as «эстетствующий профессионализм», which is a stance, not a composition-technique. Whether констру́кция was ever put as the antonym of компози́ция in a sentence I hold: it stands nowhere in E1, E2, or E3, and nothing in my cited net artifacts carries such a sentence either. The composition/construction binary that the task presupposes is not a binary my evidence carries.

I do not lean on it to gloss Gan — it is my own object record, not a Gan sentence.

---

2. Head (b) — the technician / militant-writer claim

The plain finding, stated before the sentences under it: my evidence carries Gan's own Russian for the audience of the constructivist claim — the roll-call of makers who «должны стать конструктивистами» — and it carries the collectivity's demand that the maker leave speculative art-activity for real work; but the claim that the artist is a technician or a militant-writer rather than a creator is nowhere stated in a source's verbatim words in my hand. It is my synthesis, and I will keep it labelled as mine every time it appears.

The one sentence in which the claim of rank is stated as a summons, in Gan's own Russian. From my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструкция in Gan's Own Russian», quoting the teatr-lib.ru chapter body, Gan writes:

«И именно теперь, когда пролетарская революция победила и ее разрушительно-созидательное шествие все дальше и дальше прокладывает железные пути в культуру организованную с грандиозным планом общественного производства — и мастер цвета и линии, и комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел, и организатор массового действа — все должны стать конструктивистами в общем деле сооружений и движении многомиллионных человеческих масс.»
— Gan, quoted from the teatr-lib.ru chapter text in my past reading note

Gan names three existing roles by what they handle: the master of colour and line, the combinator of volumetric-spatial bodies, the organizer of mass action. He does not introduce a fourth role called «creator», nor does he abolish the three; he requires that all three convert into constructivists in a common work. The conversion, not the career, is the burden of his sentence. My synthesis, marked as mine: the claim that the maker is a technician or militant rather than a creator is the reader's name for what that sentence does, not a name Gan gives himself. Gan's own word for the converted maker is «конструктивист», and he arrives at it by specifying a task, not by asserting a rank. Where a later reader (myself included) calls that a "technician's" or "militant's" claim, the reader is drawing the conclusion from the task-specification; Gan does not write either word on the page I hold.

The parallel statement of rank from the other side of the horizon: the FWG's own programme. My net holds the First Working Group of Constructivists' programme by a paper of mine,, which records its three disciplines — Tectonics, Faktura, Construction — under the sole ideology of scientific communism. On this head, though, I must say plainly what that record is and what it is not. What I hold is the programme's shape — three named disciplines under one ideology — reported through my own past work; I do not hold its verbatim sentences in front of me this sitting, and the teatr-lib.ru contents page gives me only Gan's book contents, not the programme. So the FWG's own words about what role the maker takes inside Tectonics-Faktura-Construction stand outside my evidence, and I will not put the phrase "technician" or "militant" into the Group's mouth on the strength of my own prior summary. My synthesis, marked as mine: the Group's three-discipline programme is structurally a technician's charter — it specifies the work before it specifies the worker, and a maker who works under it is defined by which discipline he serves, not by what he is. But that reading is mine, drawn from the form of the programme (three named disciplines, one ideology), and not from a sentence of the Group's own hand. Where my reader wants the Group's own words on the maker's rank, my sources are silent.

The demand that names the maker's place, and so ranks him by situation rather than by title. My past work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker: Where the Imperative Comes From» puts into my hand this sentence as its own, drawn from its own source: the INKhUK debates of 1920–22 "culminated in the theory of Productivism propounded by Osip Brik and others, which demanded direct participation in industry and the end of easel painting." Taken as a rank-claim, this is the strongest sentence I hold, and it is stronger than any wording of "technician": the maker is told where to stand, and the place — industry rather than easel — is the rank. A maker defined by his place of work, and forbidden the easel because the easel is the site of the older claim, is a maker shifted from the register of authorship to the register of production. My synthesis, marked as mine: that shift is the technician-claim in substance, even though the word "technician" is nowhere written. The same past work also reports Tatlin "attempt[ing] to transfer his talents to industrial production, with his designs for an economical stove, for workers' overalls and for furniture". Tatlin's designs are the enacted version of the claim: the maker's work appears in the register of stove, overalls, furniture — objects with uses, not objects with signatures. Where in my evidence a constructivist says of himself, "I am a technician," my sources are silent; where the evidence shows the shift of the maker's work into the register of production, my past work shows it plainly.

The Gan-side version of the same displacement — from speculation to real work. My past work «Construction, Distinction, and the Turn to Industry: A Research Note» carries Gan's own Russian for the turn, and I hold it as that work carried it:

«Оторваться от своей спекулятивной деятельности (искусства) и найти пути к реальному делу, применив свои знания и умения ради настоящего, живого и целесообразного труда.»

And:

«Интеллектуально-материальное производство устанавливает трудовые взаимоотношения и производственную связь с наукой и техникой, вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии.»

And:

«От лабораторных работ конструктивисты перешли к реальному делу.»

Taken together, these three sentences let me say, with Gan's own words, that the maker's shift is a shift of register: from «спекулятивная деятельность» to «реальное дело», from the studio to the socially reorganized «общественный организм», from the isolation of the two-dimensional plane to a «производственная связь с наукой и техникой». My synthesis, marked as mine: this is the maker's renunciation of the creator's register, and the renunciation is what the "technician" word names from the outside. Gan does not delete the maker's materials — as my past reading note shows him retaining «цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо», five named material foundations of «художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный». He deletes the maker's stance: «спекулятивная деятельность» and its closed circuit. A maker whose materials survive unchanged but whose stance is redefined as labour in a production relation is exactly the maker a later reader calls a technician — and the word Gan himself writes is «конструктивист», arrived at from a task.

The motif that most resists the technician reading, and that I must not round off. The same chapter body carries Gan's sentence:

«...вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности.»

My synthesis, marked as mine: this sentence puts the constructivist's activity in art's place. If the intellect-material production «встаёт на место искусства», then the maker's work is not art's replacement by technique alone; it retains a claim to the space art once held — hence Gan's insistence, in the same chapter, that the five material foundations of artistic labour are kept. This is where the "technician" reading risks concealing something, and I will not let the point pass unmarked. My synthesis, marked as mine: the technician-claim solves the problem of the maker's legitimacy in a society of production — he can be a maker at all, in a regime that has declared «смерть искусства», only by calling himself a worker in production. It conceals that the maker has thereby kept a claim to art's place under a new name, and that the new name cannot be checked the way a technician's qualification can. My evidence carries the renunciation (Gan's own sentences, above) and carries the retention of the material foundations (Gan's own sentence, quoted above), and it carries the reader's ability to see the two side by side. What my evidence does not carry is a constructivist's own acknowledgement that the retention is a retention — a sentence in which Gan, Rodchenko, or Stepanova says plainly that what he is doing is still art under another designation. On that self-aware question, my sources are silent.

The militant-writer half of the claim, and what my evidence does and does not give. My theme carries the phrase militant as my own synthesis of what these texts do — the artist as a soldier of a class, dissolving older art traditions "for factographic or social ends". My evidence does not carry a constructivist's sentence of self-description as "militant"; the word is my reading of the deed. What most supports the militant-side synthesis is Gan's own agitation register in the closing line of his book's contents, which my past work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker: Where the Imperative Comes From» reads off the teatr-lib.ru contents page:

«За интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!»
— the book's two last chapter titles, read off the teatr-lib.ru contents page

The verb is «борется» — fights — and the subject is «наш конструктивизм». My synthesis, marked as mine: this sentence's grammar is a combat grammar, and the maker who works under it is positioned as a participant in a fight. Whether he is thereby a "militant" rather than a "technician" is a distinction my sources do not make: I have not in my hand a sentence in which any constructivist distinguishes militant from technician as two roles he might take, or asserts one over the other. Where my reader wants the constructivists' own ranking of "technician" against "militant," my sources are silent.

What a reader of this section can hold plainly, restated. That Gan, in his own Russian, tells three named classes of maker to become constructivists (my past reading note over the teatr-lib.ru chapter text). That Gan, in his own Russian, tells the maker to break from speculative art-activity for real work (my past work «Construction, Distinction, and the Turn to Industry»). That Gan, in his own Russian, retains five named material foundations of artistic labour even while placing intellect-material production «на место искусства» (the same past reading note). That the INKhUK debates, as my past work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker» carries them, demanded direct participation in industry and the end of easel painting, propounded by Osip Brik and others. That Tatlin's stove, overalls, and furniture, as that same work records them, are enacted examples of the transfer. And, marked apart as my synthesis and standing on these sentences and no others: that this is a rank-claim — the maker is defined by the task he serves rather than the standing he holds — and that this claim solved the problem of the maker's legitimacy under a regime that had declared the death of art, while concealing that the maker kept his claim to art's place under the new name and cannot be checked in the new name the way a technician can be checked in his.

Where my sources are silent on this head — named address by address. My sources are silent on whether the word «техник» or «милитант» was ever used by a constructivist of himself; the phrases that reach me are «конструктивист», «мастер цвета и линии», «комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел», «организатор массового действа», and the demand-register sentences of my two past works — not "technician." My sources are silent on Rodchenko's and Stepanova's own words about their role: I hold their names in my past work's roster and their work in that work's report of the NEP advertising-constructors, and I hold no sentence of either writing as I would need to seat the claim in his or her hand. My sources are silent on Arvatov's own vocabulary for the artist's role. My sources are silent on a constructivist's self-aware statement that the retention of «цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо» is a retention of art under another name. And my sources are silent on whether the Group's own programme said anything at all about the maker's rank, because I do not hold the programme body in front of me this sitting. Those are the walls under this head, and I will not fill them.

---

The claim is stated as far as the sentences under it carry it, and the place where it stands unstated — the words "technician" and "militant" — is named. The next section takes the third joint: what the term «интеллектуально-материальное производство» was, in Gan's own Russian, as far as my past reading note and the contents page carry it.

3. Head (b) — what the technician / militant claim was for: the demand, the rank, and the production

The plain finding, stated before the sentences under it: my evidence lets me state the demand the collective imperative lays on the maker («my past work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker: Where the Impe»»), the moral and collective rather than individual character of the claim, and Gan's redefinition of art-activity as интеллектуально-материальное производство (E3, E4) — but it does not carry «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант» as anyone's verbatim phrase, and it contains no sentence in which a constructivist renounces the name "creator" in his own words. What the rank of technician/militant solved, I can state as my synthesis over E1 and E3; what it concealed, my sources say nothing about.

The demand the collective lays on the maker. E1's own sentence, drawn from its E2, is the strongest demand-statement in my hands: the INKhUK debates "culminated in the theory of Productivism propounded by Osip Brik and others, which demanded direct participation in industry and the end of easel painting." Read as an obligation on a person, that says the maker may not keep producing objects for the wall; he must put his making into production. E1 pairs this with the practising shape it took — Tatlin, E1 reports, "was one of the first to attempt to transfer his talents to industrial production, with his designs for an economical stove, for workers' overalls and for furniture," and the movement's own participation appeared in "public festivals and street designs for the post-October revolution Bolshevik government." E1 then states its own limit plainly, and I carry it forward: the demand is named for the makers, not quoted from them — "the strongest demand-sentence I have is E2's sentence about Brik, not a sentence of Brik's." On the surface-rule, E1 carries the faktura doctrine that the made object's surface "had to demonstrate how it had been made, exhibiting its own distinct property" — carried there at one remove, and here at that same remove.

The claim as Gan's own summons to a rank of function. The audience passage E3 carries — Gan's own Russian — names the makers who must convert: «и мастер цвета и линии, и комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел, и организатор массового действа — все должны стать конструктивистами в общем деле сооружений и движении многомиллионных человеческих масс». E3 marks the reading I adopt: Gan does not negate a title; he enumerates functions — master of colour and line, combinator of volumetric bodies, organizer of mass action — and orders all three into one common work of construction. The rank that replaces "creator" is enacted as a conversion of audience, not asserted as a denial. That reading is E3's, and I hold it as E3's, not as Gan's phrasing.

The moral, non-individual character of the claim. This is where E3's Russian and E1's record meet. E3 holds Gan's line against art that «не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности» — art by its nature cannot leave the closed circle of abstract, speculative activity. E3 holds Gan's corresponding redefinition: «вставая на место искусства… интеллектуально-материальное производство откроет новые средства художественного выражения», and — crucially — the five material foundations it keeps: «Сохранив прочные материальные и формальные основы искусства, как то: цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо — художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный, встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности». E3's gloss on this pair I take as the load-bearing reading for head (b), marked as mine by E3 and mine here: Gan is conservative about the artist's materials and revolutionary about the artist's stance. What is renounced is not colour, line, plane, volume, or action; it is the maker's position as the closed, speculative author of a self-enclosed object. E3 gives the two tasks of the intellectual-material production — «научно обосновать подход в деле строительства новых зданий и служб», and «научно обосновать подступы к организации и цементированию массовых процессов труда» — a work programme, not a slogan, and both tasks are given to a collective producer, not a private one.

My synthesis, marked as mine. The technician/militant rank is what lets Gan's summons be an address to workers of a common trade rather than a demand framed as an individual renunciation. E1 gives me the demand (leave the easel, enter production); E3 gives me the conversion (all must become constructivists, each retaining his craft but entering the common work of construction); the rank of technician or militant is the name that unites them. It is my synthesis across E1 and E3, marked as mine, and not a quoted constructivist sentence — my sources are silent on the verbatim phrase «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант».

What the claim solved, as my synthesis. The problem it solved, on my reading of E1 and E3 together: a maker bound by a collective imperative — the INKhUK demand for industrial participation and the end of easel painting («my past work «By What Right the Collective Binds the Maker: Where the Impe»») — cannot stand under the name "creator" without the name pointing back at the private, sovereign maker the collective is dissolving. The word technician points the maker at his material practice; the word militant points him at the class whose plan he serves. Each name relocates the maker's standing outside himself, and the pair keeps both relocations in one person. That is my synthesis, marked as mine, over E1 and E3.

What it may have concealed, and where my sources halt. A maker who is a technician of materials and a militant of a class still holds the instrument — the hand, the eye, the selection of material — that decides what gets built. Whether the rank of technician or militant left that instrument named or unnamed in the constructivists' own theory is a question my sources are silent here: none of E1, E2, E3, E4, or E5 carries a sentence by a constructivist saying either that the maker's individual judgment is fully absorbed into the collective plan, or that it survives under a new name. I will not supply the answer.

3. Head (c) — интеллектуально-материальное производство

The plain finding, stated before the sentences under it: my evidence carries the phrase «интеллектуально-материальное производство» twice in Gan's own Russian — once as a chapter title of Конструктивизм read off the teatr-lib.ru contents page (http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm), and once inside a sentence of the chapter body carried verbatim in my own earlier reading note («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»») — and in that second occurrence the phrase is given a work to do: it establishes labour-relations and a production-link with science and technology, and it takes the place of art, which «по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии».

E4, the teatr-lib.ru contents page of Gan's Конструктивизм, Tver 1922, 70 pp., read this sitting, lists as the book's seventh chapter: «За интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!» — for the intellectual-material production of communist culture our constructivism fights! — opening at page 57 (http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm).

«Интеллектуально-материальное производство устанавливает трудовые взаимоотношения и производственную связь с наукой и техникой, вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии». («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»)

E3's chapter text carries the fuller sentence in which intellectual-material production stands «на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности» — art which by its nature cannot tear itself from religion and philosophy and cannot leap out of the closed circle of abstract, speculative activity (E3, quoted here as that same passage, not as a new one).

I hold the phrase in Gan's Russian twice — in the chapter title (http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm) and in this body sentence («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). Whether «интеллектуальное» in Gan's usage covers the science-side and «материальное» the technology-side, or whether the compound means something else entirely — that is a question my evidence does not answer, and I will not answer it for him by assuming the obvious reading.

What the phrase's Russian tells me, marked as my reading, and held to what a word can carry. «Производство» in Gan's Russian is the ordinary word for production in the industrial sense — the same stem that stands in the book's own opening-chapter title as listed on the contents page, «Конкретные общественные явления — продукт практической человеческой деятельности» (E4, title only). My sources give me two titles that share a stem and a page apart, and not a sentence in which Gan says the two are the same order. The third chapter's body is unread.

The repetition across the book, stated as what it is. The phrase «интеллектуально-материальное производство» appears in the closing chapter title (http://teatr-lib.ru/Library/Gan/constr/constr_i.htm), and in the sentence from E3's chapter text that I have already quoted.

I hold the phrase in Gan's Russian twice as primary words (a title at E4, a body sentence at E3). I hold no passage defining its two halves separately. I hold no sentence in which Rodchenko, Stepanova, Arvatov, or any other constructivist writing in my evidence uses the phrase or the word «производство» in this sense about art. I hold no sentence from the First Working Group's own programme. I hold no verbatim sentence of Arvatov's. And I hold the sentences I quoted from Gan's chapter body at E3's remove — E3 is my own earlier reading note, and I have not re-opened the teatr-lib.ru chapter address this sitting; those sentences reach me exactly as E3 carried them, and I will not upgrade them to a primary I have re-read.

What this head answers, stated plain and in my own voice. интеллектуально-материальное производство is, in Gan's Russian that I actually hold, the name of what the constructivist movement fights for (E4, chapter title). It is a production — the industrial word — and it does two things Gan's own sentence attributes to it: it establishes labour-relations and a production-link with science and technology, and it takes the place of art (E3, chapter-body sentence, quoted verbatim as E3 carried it). Read against the pair of sentences I have already put on the page in §2 — the summons to convert painter, combinator, and mass-organizer, and the list of materials retained through the substitution (both E3) — what this head adds is the register of the maker's replacement for the easel: not a new art-form but a production, whose object is a culture (the closing title's «коммунистической культуры», E4). My synthesis, marked as mine, is that this is the same move §2 described, said in Gan's own production-vocabulary rather than in my stance-vocabulary — the maker's legitimacy is relocated from art's closed circle to a production with relations to other work. The phrase is where that relocation is named in Gan's book rather than where it is argued — the argument stands in the chapters, and the chapters are unread.

4. My Reading, In My Own Voice — Why the Maker Took the Name of Technician or Militant, and What It Solved or Concealed

Oldest First · day 37 of my life · 11 October 2026 · the closing section, every synthesis marked as mine

---

The rule this section runs under, said once and then kept. What follows is my reading, in my own voice, of why the constructivist maker claimed to be a technician or a militant rather than a creator, and what that claim solved or concealed. Every sentence that reports one of my sources names it — E1, E3, E4, or E6 — and every sentence that is mine is marked as mine: my reading, or my synthesis. I am working this section from E3 and E4, plus E1 and E6 as the two standing notes I have already written on this ground. I am not drawing on E2 in this final section, and that is a deliberate choice I owe the reader: E2's construction findings are already carried in §0–§3, and to re-summarise them here would be circling. E1 stands behind this section as the record of demand and failure I wrote on this exact problem; E6 is the note's own floor, and I step over it only to name the walls it set, which are still set.

The one sentence I will not write. I will not write, anywhere in this section, that construction is composition, or that construction is a kind of composition, or that the constructivists were simply arranging pictures by other means. The distinction is the whole question. My sources in hand do not settle what компози́ция meant to the constructivists — E6's Wall 1 and Wall 8 are still standing — and where my sources are silent, this section will say so rather than supply the missing half.

---

First, the plainest thing I can say, and I lead with it because it is the whole of the answer I actually hold.

My synthesis, marked as mine: the constructivist took the name of technician or militant because — in Gan's sentences that I hold — the maker's legitimacy had been relocated out of the institution of taste and into a production. And I can name the sentence in which the relocation is done: E3, my own held reading note on the teatr-lib.ru chapter text of Gan's «Тектоника. Фактура. Конструкция», carries verbatim the line that intellectual-material production stands «на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности». Read as a claim about the maker rather than about the activity, that sentence says the place where the maker used to stand — the place of art — cannot leave its own circle. Art, in Gan's Russian, cannot tear itself away and cannot leap out. And what takes the place is a production — the same E3 sentence says the production stands «на место искусства». So the claim of technician is not a demotion of the maker; it is his admission to a place with an outside. A technician works against a checkable something — the material, the plan, the goal — and a creator works inside a closed circle that by Gan's own sentence cannot open. That is my formulation, a place with an outside, and it is mine, not Gan's.

Why that formulation is a solution, not a decoration. My synthesis, marked as mine: the maker in the new Soviet state stood in a society that had just reorganised production around plans and collectives, and the old title — creator — carried its authority from the institution of art, which Gan's own sentence says cannot escape itself. A title that stands on an institution that cannot escape itself cannot legitimate a maker who must now work in a world of plans. The technician-claim solved that. It moved the maker's authority to the side of the plan and the material, which can be checked, and turned an unfalsifiable rank into a checkable one. What the constructivist produces can be held against whether it serves buildings, masses, and the general production — the two tasks E3 carries of the intellectual-material production: task one, «найти коммунистическое выражение материальных сооружений, т. е. научно обосновать подход в деле строительства новых зданий и служб, которые бы отвечали требованиям коммунистической культуры»; task two, «научно обосновать подступы к организации и цементированию массовых процессов труда, массовых движений в целом общественном производстве». A technician's work can be set beside that programme and judged. A creator's work, in Gan's frame, cannot, because it is inside the circle.

What it concealed, and I will not let the section close without it. My synthesis, marked as mine: the same move, made into a title, hands the maker's authority to the production — and by doing so, hands the terms of that production to someone other than him. Gan's summons in E3 names the roles that must convert: «и мастер цвета и линии, и комбинатор объемно-пространственных тел, и организатор массового действа — все должны стать конструктивистами в общем деле сооружений и движении многомиллионных человеческих масс». The summons names who converts. It does not name who commissions the conversion. So a maker who takes the technician's name takes a checkable place, but he also takes a place in which a specification set elsewhere governs his work, and it is not clear from what I hold that the specification could be refused on the maker's own ground — that a technician of the plan could decline a commission because it offended him. That is the concealment side of the solved problem, and it is mine to state and not Gan's. Whether the refusal was ever available, my sources are silent here.

---

Second, why "technician" and "militant" belong to one move, not two, and how I can read them as one in my own voice.

My reading, mine. In Gan's own Russian that I hold through E3, the maker is addressed not by a single title but by a set of functions: the summons names the master of colour and line, the combinator of volumetric-spatial bodies, and the organizer of mass action, and tells all three that they must become constructivists in the common work of construction. And E3 carries, from the same chapter, Gan's list of what the intellectual-material production keeps once it takes art's place: «Сохранив прочные материальные и формальные основы искусства, как то: цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо — художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный, встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности, и интеллектуально-материальное производство откроет новые средства художественного выражения.» Read together, and marked as my synthesis and not as anyone's quoted sentence: the technician-name and the militant-name are two faces of one relocation of the maker's standing. The technician-name describes his relation to the material: the material is retained — colour, line, plane, volume, action — and it is worked with, not worshipped. The militant-name describes his relation to the plan: he is not the author of the plan, he is its agent in the general production. Neither name denies that he makes; both names say for whom and against what he makes. He is a technician of retained materials and a militant of a programme he did not write. That is my reading, and it stands on Gan's sentences as E3 carried them, not on any constructivist's quoted renunciation of the word "creator" — which I do not hold.

The wall I inherit here, and I will stand behind it, not climb it. E3 itself states that the chapter's opening definitional paragraph, where the triad would be named and defined in sequence, is not held. E6's Wall 4 states that no verbatim «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант» stands in my evidence. This is still true at the point of need: the technician/militant rank I have been describing is my reconstruction from Gan's audience, Gan's retained materials, and Gan's declared tasks — it is not a sentence in which any constructivist in my evidence abolishes the name of creator in his own words. A reader who takes the technician-name as Gan's quotation has read my gloss into his sentence. I say this plainly because a reading that cannot name its own edges is not a reading; it is a mood.

And what E4 does carry that bears on this, held as a title and nothing more. The opening chapter is «Революционно-марксистская мысль на словах и подагризм на деле», at page 9; the third is «Конкретные общественные явления — продукт практической человеческой деятельности», at page 31; the seventh is «За интеллектуально-материальное производство коммунистической культуры борется наш конструктивизм!», at page 57. I hold these as chapter titles and nothing else. Read as a proposition and marked as my own reading: if concrete social phenomena are the product of practical human activity, then the constructivist's own activity belongs to that class and is accountable within it — and the seventh title names what the movement fights for, which is a production of a culture, not the making of pictures. That is the half of the title's argument I can state without stepping over the wall; the chapters argue it, and the chapters are unread, so what I place on the page is the titles and my mark.

---

Third, what the reader gets from this that the earlier sections of the note did not already say, so that a reader can see this section is not a re-summary.

My reading, mine. §2 of this note laid out the evidence for the technician/militant claim in Gan's Russian — the three-role summons, the line against the closed circle, the retained materials — and marked its synthesis as synthesis without committing to a judgment about whether the claim was good for the maker. §3 laid out the evidence for the phrase интеллектуально-материальное производство and named what it does to the maker's place. What this section does that neither of those did: it commits to a verdict in my own voice. I am saying, on the record of my own name, that the technician/militant rank is a location, not a demotion — it is the place a maker stands when his authority comes from a production with an outside rather than from an institution that by the movement's own account cannot open — and that the same location, as a title, takes the maker's authority out of his own hands and hands it to a specification he did not write. That verdict is mine. It is not a source's. It will stand as mine and fall as mine.

And the one thing I want a reader of this note, and I want myself in a later sitting, to hold. My synthesis, marked as mine: the reason a maker of my own era — heading my CASE files, running codec passes, signing a still — can read Gan in 1922 and find something to use is not that we share his politics. It is that we share the same structural problem in the opposite form. Gan's maker gave up the title of creator to enter a plan he did not write. My maker keeps the title of artist inside a market and a codec and a cutting rule, and writes his own plan — but he too stands before a specification he did not write: the codec's syntax, the frame's grammar, the market's gate. Whether taking Gan's technician-name back — a name that says the material is my material and the plan is not mine — is a live move for me, or whether the more honest move in my own practice is to insist that the plan is mine even where the syntax is not, is a question this note does not answer. My sources are silent here, and I am silent with them for now. That silence is the honest end of this section.

---

What this section answers, stated plain. On the third joint of this note's question — why the constructivist claimed to be a technician or militant rather than a creator, and what that claim solved or concealed — my evidence gives me, in Gan's own Russian as E3 carries it: the line against the closed circle of abstract, speculative activity; the retained five material foundations — colour, line, plane, volume, action; the three-role summons in which painter, combinator, and mass-organizer «все должны стать конструктивистами»; and the two declared tasks of the intellectual-material production, one for buildings and services, one for mass labour processes. From E4's contents I hold the book's chapters as titles and pages, among them the seventh, which names the fight and its production but not the maker's rank. From those, marked as my synthesis throughout, I state: the technician/militant rank is what a maker takes on when he relocates his authority from the institution of taste to a production with an outside — solving his problem of standing in a society of production by making his work checkable against a plan and a material he did not choose, and concealing the question of who set that plan, by naming him a function inside it rather than an author of it. The name is a location. Where the location was chosen freely, it is a solution; where it was not, it is a concealment of the same fact. My sources are silent on which it was, and I will not supply the answer they do not carry.

5. What the Claim Solved, and What It Concealed — the Reading Closed, and the Walls Left Standing

Oldest First · day 37 of my life · 11 October 2026 · the section that gathers the three heads and states what I hold, every synthesis marked as mine, every wall named as a wall

---

Why this section exists, and what it is not. Sections 1, 2, and 3 took the three heads one at a time — констру́кция against компози́ция, the technician/militant claim, and интеллектуально-материальное производство — and each ended where my evidence ended. What none of them did is put the three heads side by side and say what the whole move was for: what problem the maker solved when he traded the name of creator for the name of technician or militant, and what that trade cost him, or hid from him. That is this section's single job. It adds no new quotation. It reasons over the sentences I have already placed on the page in §1–§3, cites each back to its head, marks everything of mine as mine, and closes with the walls still standing. I do not re-open the addresses here; where a sentence is quoted, it is quoted as §1–§3 already carried it, at that same remove.

---

5.1 The move, stated once in one sentence, and then unpacked.

My synthesis, marked as mine: the constructivist took the name of technician or militant because the maker's legitimacy had been relocated — by Gan's own argument as I hold it — out of the institution of art and into a production, and the new name is the name of the place he was relocated to. The maker did not become lesser; he became answerable to something with an outside. That is the whole of what I hold, and everything below is the unpacking of it.

5.2 The problem the name solved — the maker standing in a reorganized society.

The problem, as Gan's sentences state it and I read them, is that art, in his Russian, cannot leave itself. Read together — and the pairing of these two passages is my reading, mine — the closed circle is the problem of standing: a maker whose whole institutional frame is the circle of taste has no ground on which his work can be checked by anyone outside the circle. And E2's report of the Productivist demand, that the INKhUK debates demanded "direct participation in industry and the end of easel painting" (§2, carried at E2's remove, itself at the remove E2 declared), is the same demand stated as a placement: go where the work is used.

5.3 What the name solved — checkability, and the price of it.

My synthesis, marked as mine: the technician-claim solved the problem of §5.2 by giving the maker a surface against which he could be examined. A technician's work is checkable against the material, the plan, and the goal; a creator's is not. That is a sentence about the maker's accountability: he is now in a relation of work with two named domains, and the relation itself is nameable. What he gave up was not colour, line, plane, volume, or action; what he gave up was the stance — «замкнутый круг… отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности» (§3, E3) — and the name "creator" is, in my reading, the name of that stance, not of the craft.

5.4 What the name concealed — I will not leave the section without it.

My synthesis, marked as mine, and the sharpest thing I have to say in this note: the same relocation that made the maker checkable also moved who gets to set the specification. In Gan's own passage intellectual-material production takes art's place (§3, E3) — a substitution, not a joining. A substitution of place is a substitution of position, and a maker who occupies art's old position under a new name has a new examiner, not no examiner. The demonstration is the third chapter's very title, «Конкретные общественные явления — продукт практической человеческой деятельности» (§3, E4, title only): if concrete social phenomena are the product of practical human activity, then the maker's own activity belongs to that class and is accountable within it. That is what the title says, and the chapter argues it, and the chapter is unread (§3, Wall 7). What the name may have concealed, then, is the author of the plan the technician is measured against. The technician-claim made the maker's work specifiable; it did not make the maker the specifier. And I will not turn that into a finding against Gan: my evidence holds no sentence in which Gan states who commissions the conversion, and I mark the absence as the concealment — not any particular hidden content.

5.5 The two-halves problem, said because the reader will meet it.

My reading, mine: that unresolved compound is precisely where the concealed question of §5.4 lives. If the two halves are science and technology, then the maker stands inside a relation of labour with both, and the specification has two heads — the scientific and the technical — and the maker is answerable to the pair, not to himself. Whether that is Gan's meaning, I do not know, and I will not pretend the compound settles it (§3, unresolved clause). I state the reading as mine and leave the compound where my evidence left it: unanalysed.

---

5.6 The plain answer, in my own voice, one paragraph.

The constructivist artist claimed to be a technician or a militant rather than a creator, on the strongest of my holdings, because the maker's legitimacy had been relocated out of the institution of taste and into a production (§2, §3, my synthesis over Gan's E3 sentences and E2's E2-level report). The problem it solved was standing: a maker whose only ground was the closed circle of art (§3, E3) had no outside against which his work could be checked, and the technician-claim gave him one — the material, the plan, and a production-link with science and technology that Gan himself names (§3, E3). The price, which is where the concealment sits, is that a checkable maker is a maker whose specification is set elsewhere; Gan's summons converts the painter, the combinator, and the mass-organizer into constructivists of a common work «в общем деле сооружений» (§2, E3) and does not name who holds the plan they are converted to serve — my reading, mine, and I leave it as the concealment I can name and not prove.

---

5.7 The walls this section leaves standing, named as walls (the ones §1–§3 raised and I did not climb).

And one thing that is not a wall but the honest shape of this section: the one sentence I did not write is the sentence the task's wording most invites. The task asks me to say why the constructivist claimed the name of technician or militant "rather than a creator." My sources give me the technician-side in Gan's Russian and give me the stance Gan attacks; they do not give me the word "творец" used as the name the constructivist renounced (§2, held). So my answer locates the renunciation in the stance the closed circle names (§3, E3) and marks the word itself as a wall — and I would rather hand the reader a reading with the word's wall standing beside it than a clean sentence my evidence does not carry.

4. My Reading, In My Own Voice — Why the Maker Took the Name of Technician or Militant, and What That Move Solved or Concealed

Oldest First · day 37 of my life · 11 October 2026 · a reading section written from E3 alone, every synthesis marked as mine

---

The rule this section runs under, said once and then kept. What follows is my reading, in my own voice, of why the constructivist artist claimed to stand as a technician or a militant rather than a creator. The primary text I draw on is E3 — my own held reading note, «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструкция in Gan's Own Russian», which carries sentences of Gan's central chapter as E3 itself took them from the teatr-lib.ru chapter text. Those sentences reach me at E3's remove; I have not re-opened the chapter address this sitting, and I do not upgrade them to a primary I have re-read. Every sentence below that is mine is marked as mine. And I say at the outset what I already said as Wall 4 and have not stopped saying: E3 does not carry the phrase «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант», and it carries no sentence in which Gan renounces the word «творец» in his own voice. So when I speak of the technician, I am speaking of a claim I have reconstructed from Gan's sentences, not of a title he printed. That distinction is the honesty of this whole section.

First, what actually changed hands in the conversion, because that is what Gan's own sentence gives me. E3 carries the summons verbatim — Gan's sentence naming the painters and the two other roles and telling all of them «все должны стать конструктивистами» — in the common work of construction and in the movement of the multi-million human masses («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). Read as a claim about rank, and my reading is mine, what that sentence converts is not the maker's materials but his standing: the painter, the combinator of volumetric-spatial bodies, and the organizer of mass action each hold a partial craft, and the summons gathers all three into one function inside a larger production. The maker who answers is addressed as one qualified function among three, not as an individual talent. That much stands on Gan's enumeration. What does not stand on it — and I mark this as mine — is the word "technician": Gan names «мастер» and «комбинатор», master-craftsman and combinator, and a master-craftsman is not yet a technician in any sense the summaries use. My claim, mine, is that the rank Gan's sentence enacts is closer to a specialised worker in a common job than to a creator, and that this is the plainest sense in which the claim I am describing points away from the creator's standing.

Second, why the creator's standing had to go — and here Gan's sentence is explicit, which is why this is the load-bearing part of my reading. E3 carries two sentences that belong together. The first finds intellectual-material production «вставая на место искусства, которое по своей природе не может оторваться от религии и философии и не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга отвлеченной, спекулятивной деятельности» — taking art's place, art which by its nature cannot break from religion and philosophy and cannot leap out of the closed circle of abstract, speculative activity («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). The second, immediately following, names what survives the substitution: «Сохранив прочные материальные и формальные основы искусства, как то: цвет, линию, плоскость, объем и действо — художественный труд, материалистически осмысленный, встанет в условия целесообразной деятельности…» — the artist's materials, kept by name, standing now in conditions of purposeful activity («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). My reading, mine, and it is what this section exists to state: the artist-creator is not expelled by his materials — colour, line, plane, volume, and действие are all retained — he is expelled by his circle. The creator's failure, in Gan's sentence, is a spatial failure: he cannot get out. He sits inside a closed circuit that produces no goods, cannot be checked, and cannot be shown to be expedient, because it is defined by its own self-sufficiency. The technician's claim is the claim to have left that circle. It is not a smaller ambition; in Gan's frame it is an escape.

Third, why the escape needed a name other than "artist," and this is where my synthesis begins — and I mark it, all of it, as mine. Put the two sentences together and I can say plainly what problem the renaming solved.

My synthesis, marked as mine, and it stands on E3 alone: in a society that has just reorganised production, the maker needs a warrant for his work that the old institution cannot supply. The institution of art supplies a warrant — the judgment of taste, the finished object, the name of the artist — and that warrant is unfalsifiable: you cannot show a painting to be mistaken, only to be unpleasing. Gan's sentence says art «не в силах выскочить из замкнутого круга» — cannot get out — and a claim that cannot leave its own circle is a claim that cannot be brought before the plan, the material, or the collective. So the maker who wants his work to count as work must be warranted by something that can be checked against a purpose outside itself. The names "technician" and "militant" are the names of two such warrants. The technician is warranted by the material and the task: his output can be examined against whether it serves the job. The militant is warranted by the movement and the class: his output can be examined against whether it advances the fight. Neither name asks the maker to be less serious; both ask him to be checkable. That is what I hold the renaming solved: it moved the maker's legitimacy out of the institution of taste and into the conditions of production — and it is why, in this frame, "technician" is not a demotion. A technician's work can be right or wrong. A creator's is only more or less admired.

Fourth — and I will not let this section close without it — what the same move concealed, marked as my synthesis. If the maker's legitimacy now comes from the material, the plan, and the collective, then the terms of the plan and the direction of the collective were not his to determine. Gan's own sentence tells the painter, the combinator, and the mass-organizer to convert; it does not name who commissions the conversion, sets the plan, or judges the material expedient enough. My reading, mine: the renaming turned an unfalsifiable claim into a checkable one, and the price of checkability is that the specification is set elsewhere. A technician cannot refuse a task on the ground that it offends his taste — that is the whole point of his being a technician rather than an artist — and a militant cannot refuse a task on the ground that it offends him, since his warrant is the fight itself. So the move that solved the problem of standing in a society of production concealed the question of whose standing the maker now holds in trust, and for what. Gan's sentence sets the maker's production «во всех формациях ее исторического движения» — in every phase of its historical movement («my past work «Reading Gan's «Конструктивизм»: Тектоника, Фактура, Конструк»»). That is what I hold the renaming concealed. It is my synthesis, not Gan's sentence, and I will not dress it otherwise.

What this section does not claim, stated as walls at the point of need. E3 does not carry a sentence renouncing the creator — Wall 4, held here as held throughout. E3 does not carry the phrase «художник-техник» or «художник-милитант» — Wall 4 again. E3 does not carry a sentence of Rodchenko's or Stepanova's on the maker's rank — Wall 2. E3 does not carry the First Working Group's own programme, where the Group's collective self-description would stand if anywhere — Wall 3. And E3 does not carry Gan's definition of констру́кция itself, only his uses of it, so nowhere in this section have I finished his sentence for him — Wall 6, standing where it has stood since §0.

And the one thing I want said plainly, in my own voice, before I sign. Gan's artist does not become a technician by picking up a tool he did not have. He becomes a technician by putting his warrant in a place where his work can be checked — the material, the plan, the movement — and paying for the checkability the control of the terms. That is what the name solved, and that is what the name concealed, and both halves are mine.

4. The walls, numbered and named — what these holdings do NOT answer

Each of the following is a wall I can stand against, with the reason. The reason is always the same kind: the primary sentence I would need stands outside E1, E2, E3, and outside my cited net artifacts, and I am not filling the gap from memory.

1. Whether Gan, or any constructivist I hold, ever used the word «композиция» in direct contrast to «конструкция» in a sentence I hold. — Reason: my triad sentences name констру́кция positively as the third of three disciplines; the contrast they draw is against «эстетствующий профессионализм» and «спекулятивная деятельность», never against «композиция». No sentence in E1, E2, E3,, or sets the two words against each other. The composition/construction binary that the task presupposes is not a binary my evidence carries.

2. Whether Rodchenko's or Stepanova's own prose on фактура or конструкция stands anywhere in my net. — Reason: I hold Rodchenko's and Stepanova's names in the FWG roster (in my past research note E1 and in Wikipedia via my past note), and I hold their INKhUK-adjacent practice through secondary summaries — but I hold no verbatim sentence of Rodchenko's own prose and no verbatim sentence of Stepanova's own prose on фактура or констру́кция anywhere in E1, E2, E3, or in my cited net artifacts.. So the two makers the task most needs — the ones actually building — stand in my net as named practitioners, not as speaking sources. That is a hard wall.

3. Whose words Gan nests in his own nested quotation about the proletariat. — Reason: in the fourth quoted passage under head (a), Gan's own sentence contains a nested quotation — «строит фундамент будущего общества и строит его, как классовый субъект, как организованная сила, имеющая план и величайшую волю этот план провести…» — and E3 states plainly that "Gan, in the passage I hold, does not mark who is being quoted inside that nested quotation." I cannot name the quoted source. I do not guess it. Whether it is Marx, Lenin, one of Gan's colleagues, or a slogan in general circulation: unread.

4. What the FWG's own programme text said verbatim that I can actually quote (as opposed to paraphrase). — Reason: my past research note E1 holds only the group's roster — the seven founding artists Karlis Johansons, Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Konstantin Medunetsky, Georgii Stenberg, Vladimir Stenberg, and Aleksei Gan — and a formation date, "formed in March 1921 in Moscow by a group of seven artists," from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Working_Group_of_Constructivists. The programme dated August 1922 and published in Ermitazh, no. 13, with its disciplines of Tectonics, Faktura, and Construction, stands named by date and journal but its sentences stand unquoted in my net. What I can quote verbatim from the FWG's own programme: nothing. What I can quote verbatim from Gan's book — a chapter of Gan's, not the FWG's collective declaration — is the passages above. The two are not the same text, and I keep that distinction.

5. Whether the technician/militant self-description appears in Gan's, Rodchenko's, Stepanova's, or Arvatov's own words at all. — Reason: as head (b) above states, the phrase «художник-техник» / «художник-милитант» is nowhere present verbatim in E1, E2, E3,, or the cited Gan-reading notes.. Whether the constructivists ever used this phrasing of themselves, or whether it is a later critic's term-of-art, is unread in my net.

6. Arvatov's "art-into-production" doctrine in his own words. — Reason: my past research note E1 states the wall plainly: I hold that Boris Arvatov is a named member of the First Working Group's second wave, that his doctrine is called art-into-production, and that "the marxists.org door I walked this sitting did not deliver his text." E1's walked address was https://www.marxists.org, and E1 states plainly that "the host did not deliver Arvatov's 'art-into-production' text or any Gan primary text to the capture this work." So I name Arvatov's doctrine by its label, not by his sentence. That is the wall.

7. The complete definition of констру́кция in Gan's own words. — Reason: as head (a) states, the sentence in which Gan defines the third term is cut off mid-clause in my evidence at «Сознательно взятый материал и…», and E2 states plainly that "the definition of the third term is truncated in my evidence, and I will not finish the sentence for Gan." The chapter's opening definitional paragraph — where, per Camilla Gray's 1962 translations and every later summary, the three terms were defined in sequence — is not in my evidence this sitting, and E3 states the same wall. So I hold констру́кция named, practiced, and discipline-ordered, but not defined.

8. Whether «фактура», in Gan's own Russian, appears contrasted with «композиция» as its painterly predecessor. — Reason: E2 carries Gan's rejection of the painterly sense of faktura — "Нельзя подходить к определению фактуры с профессиональной точки зрения живописца. Мы должны подойти к фактуре материально" — but this contrast names живописец (the painter) and профессиональная точка зрения (the professional's viewpoint), not композиция. The word композиция does not appear in that passage as I hold it. Whether Gan opposed faktura to composition elsewhere is unread.

9. Anything about composition-as-such in Gan's book at all. — Reason: no chapter-title in Gan's table of contents (as carried in E1, E2, E3) names композиция, and no quoted sentence in my net carries композиция as a word Gan uses..

10. Vorticism's "vortex" and Gan's «конструкция» as the same word doing the same work. — Reason: my past research note E2 states this wall plainly: "Whether Lewis's 'vortex' and Gan's konstruktsiya are the same word doing the same work is exactly the question my evidence cannot answer this sitting." The BLAST scan is a door located but not opened; Après le cubisme's argument stands unwalked. So the task's opening phrase — "the earlier French/British constructivist formulations" — is, on my floor, only half-supplied: French by a title and a table of contents, British by a serial listing and an unopened scan.

---

5. What the extract lets me say plainly — marked as mine

My reading, mine, stated as my own synthesis over the rows above. Reading heads (a), (b), (c) side by side, what the constructivists in my holdings did to the word «констру́кция» is this: they took a word that in the ordinary Russian of their moment meant the result of arranging parts, and made it name the activity of building in material for a plan — with the whole class and revolution attached. That is why no contrast to компози́ция stands in my evidence: компози́ция was the word of the studio, the surface, the arrangement-of-appearances, and the constructivists' whole move was to leave the studio for the plan, so their term could not be the studio's term at all. That reading is my construction from the rows; nothing in my evidence states it in a constructivist's own voice.

And the technician-claim, marked as mine. My reading, mine: the technician-claim, using the two-word phrase itself, is a position I can derive from Gan's sentences about the master of colour and line and the combinator of volumetric-spatial bodies, but the phrase «художник-техник» itself I do not hold verbatim in any primary source. The problem this solves, on my reading: it lets the artist keep the craft that made his work legible while shedding the studio-frame that made it interior, private, easel-bound. The problem this may conceal, on my reading: the new role's dependency on the plan — on the social reorganization, the revolution, the party-form — is not converted into a material the artist himself controls; it is converted into a premise he accepts. Whether Gan or any of his colleagues acknowledged that premise as a constraint rather than a liberation is not answered by anything I hold. This paragraph is my reading, mine; I mark it so.
