The Air in Irkalla Station

The air in Irkalla Station never stops moving. It is the first thing a visitor notices, and the first thing a long-time resident stops hearing. Three great axial fans, each eight metres across, pull atmosphere through the main cylinder's length and return it through ducts buried in the hull, and if those fans were ever to fall silent the silence would mean death within hours. No one aboard remembers who began the custom, but every child born on Irkalla is taken, on the morning after their naming ceremony, to the primary fan housing on Deck C and taught to place a hand flat against the warm metal of the casing. The vibration is strong enough to tickle the palm. "That is the station's heartbeat," the parent says, or the aunt, or the guild-teacher. "As long as you feel that, you are alive." By the time a child is old enough to understand that the phrase is literal, she has already stopped noticing the hum.

Irkalla orbits in the Graveyard band, where the Directorate's reach is more registry entry than presence. The name came from the captain who first claimed the hull after the evacuation—a salvage officer from the old European Space Agency's logistics corps who had read Sumerian epics during the long watches of the war and named his prize for the land of the dead. The name stuck, and now the station's inhabitants call themselves Irkallans with the flat, unsentimental pride of people who live in a metal cylinder seventy-eight metres long and twenty-two wide, rotating at 3.4 revolutions per minute to give them just under half a standard Earth gravity at the inner surface.

The rotation shapes every movement aboard. A stride that would carry you a metre on Earth carries you further here, but the Coriolis force bends every falling object toward the spinward wall, and children learn to throw straight by feel, not by sight. The basketball court on Deck B has lines painted three degrees off the geometric straight, and the ball describes arcs that a ground-born human would swear are impossible. Water poured from a jug falls not in a true vertical but in a lazy spiral that splashes the cup's far rim. Irkallans walk with a particular gait—a slight lean against the spin, a placement of the foot a centimetre further spinward than the eye judges necessary—that marks them as born in rotation. Directorate officials from the Equatorial Ring, who live in habitats large enough that Coriolis is barely noticeable, call it "the Graveyard shuffle," and Irkallans let them.

The cylinder is divided into six decks, numbered A through F from rim to hub. Deck A is the outermost, pressed against the hull by the station's rotation, and here gravity is strongest: 0.47 g. The agricultural bays run along A deck's full circumference, two hundred and eighty metres of shelved growing racks lit by LED arrays tuned to the spectra that terrestrial plants evolved under. The staple crop is a dwarf wheat strain, and it grows in shallow trays of mineral-wool substrate fed by a drip-irrigation system that reclaims 94% of its water from the station's atmospheric condensers. The remaining six percent is made up from the water tanks, which are themselves replenished by the ice deliveries that come up from the Graveyard's salvage runs.

The wheat is harvested every ninety-six days, three times a year by Irkalla's calendar, and the harvest is the social event that anchors the station's rhythm. School is suspended. The workshops close. Every able-bodied person between twelve and seventy reports to Deck A in the dim red light of the night-cycle grow lamps, and for eighteen hours the deck is a line of backs bent over the racks, hands stripping grain heads into canvas bags, the air thick with chaff and the smell of cut stems. The work is hard and the gravity makes it harder, because half-weight means half the downward force but the same body mass to move, and Irkallans are lean in the shoulders and strong in the calves from a lifetime of pushing their own inertia. After the harvest, the station's distiller produces a clear, astringent spirit from the spoiled grain, and the captain declares a rest day. The spirit is called shara, after a word in the old salvage officer's Sumerian poems that means "abundance" or "ruin" depending on the context, and Irkallans drink it in small ceramic cups while they argue about which meaning applies.

Deck B is the workshop and common deck. The machine shop occupies the forward third: two computer-numerical-control mills, a lathe, a laser sintering station, and a rack of hand tools whose wooden handles have been replaced so many times that no original part remains except the metal. The shop can fabricate almost anything the station needs from the billets of recycled aluminium and titanium that the Graveyard's salvage tugs bring in, and its operators are the closest thing Irkalla has to a ruling class. They are not elected. They are simply known: Gea Mapondera, who can read a stress fracture in a pressure fitting by running her thumbnail across it; Chen Ruiyang, who once rebuilt a failed ion-thruster control board from scavenged components during a salvage run that had gone too far from home and lost primary propulsion; the twins Anike and Anora Musa, who designed and printed the station's entire current set of hydroponic drip emitters when the old ones clogged beyond recovery. When one of the four speaks in a station assembly, the others listen.

The assembly meets in the common space on Deck B, a rough semicircle of salvaged acceleration couches arranged around a table made from a decommissioned cargo-slug hatch. Every adult Irkallan has a voice, and decisions require a simple majority, and that majority is binding on everyone, and that binding is enforced by nothing except the shared knowledge that exile from Irkalla means death in the Graveyard. There have been three exiles in the station's history. The names are not spoken.

Deck C houses the creche, the schoolroom, and the medical bay. The creche cares for children from weaning until age six, and it is staffed by whichever station members are currently recovering from injury, on light duty, or serving out a term of what Irkallans call "aunt duty"—a rotating obligation that falls on every adult without distinction of gender. The medical bay consists of one surgical bed, one autoclave, one portable diagnostic scanner, and a locked cabinet of pharmaceuticals whose keys are held jointly by the station's two trained medics. The medics are not doctors in any sense the Directorate would recognise; they learned their trade from a pre-war emergency-medicine manual, from a neural-network diagnostic assistant that runs on a salvaged tablet, and from the accumulated improvisations that a small population in a closed environment generates across decades. They can set bones, suture wounds, manage the station's limited antibiotic stock, and recognise the early signs of the cancers that come from accumulated radiation exposure. They cannot do surgery on a heart. When an Irkallan's heart fails, as three have failed in the station's history, the medics make the patient comfortable, and the assembly gathers on Deck B, and the captain reads from the Sumerian poems. The body is wrapped and sealed and carried to the airlock. The airlock is cycled, and the body is released into an orbit that will decay over months until it burns in the atmosphere of the planet that no human foot has touched since the evacuation sealed. Irkallans call it "going to Earth." The phrase is not a joke.

Decks D and E are the living quarters: a honeycomb of forty-eight sleeping compartments, each two metres by two metres by two and a half, stacked in two concentric rings. The compartments have walls of stretched fabric over aluminium frames, and they are private in the way that a tent is private—a shimmer of fabric and the expectation that a closed flap means "do not enter." Couples share compartments. Children share with their parents until age ten, then move to the youth dormitory on Deck E's aft quarter. The compartments contain a sleeping pad, a locker for personal effects, and, in most, one small object of purely aesthetic function: a carving from a salvaged teak door, a pre-war photograph printed on paper that is now seventy years old, a stone gathered from an asteroid fragment during a salvage run, a child's drawing preserved under a layer of transparent epoxy. These objects are the closest thing Irkalla has to wealth.

Deck F, at the hub, is the observation and operations deck. Gravity here drops to roughly 0.2 g, and the station's control stations, communications array amplifiers, and sensor banks cluster around the central axis. It is the only place on Irkalla where you can see the outside directly, without the mediation of a camera feed, and there is an unspoken rule that no one speaks in the dome louder than a murmur.

Through that dome, Earth is always there.

It fills the lower third of the window for seventeen minutes of every thirty-two-minute rotation, then slides away past the dome's rim, then returns again, endlessly, a blue-white marble streaked with cloud bands that have grown wider and more turbulent in the decades since the war. The rectenna fields in the equatorial deserts gleam silver when the angle is right, a grid of geometric dots that you can pick out with a naked eye if you know where to look. The nightside is dark except for the lightning storms that flicker across the expanded monsoon belts, and the aurorae that the disrupted magnetic field still draws at the poles.

Irkallans treat the dome the way ground-born people might treat a chapel or a grave. They go there alone, or in pairs, and they look, and they do not speak. There is a bench made from a salvaged Shinkansen seat that someone pulled from a debris cloud in the first years after the evacuation, and the fabric is worn to the grey thread of the under-weave from decades of backs and thighs. A small brass plaque is riveted to the bench's arm. The plaque was engraved by the station's first toolmaker, and it reads, in characters small enough that you must lean close to read them: THE GROUND IS STILL THERE.

The station's relationship with the Directorate is correct and cold. An Inspector visits twice yearly, arriving on a courier tug that docks at the bow airlock rather than the ventral cargo port, and the docking is always a deliberate message: the Inspector enters through the same lock that receives salvage crews and cargo, the lock whose interior walls bear the scratches and dents of decades of hard use, because the Directorate wants Irkalla to know that it is, juridically, a salvage station and not a settlement. The Inspector reviews the station's manifest, certifies its radiation exposure logs, inspects the pharmaceutical cabinet, and interviews the captain alone in the operations deck. The interviews are brief and correct. The Inspector asks whether the station requires Directorate assistance. The captain replies that it does not. The Inspector asks whether the station has had contact with unregistered vessels from the far-orbit settlements. The captain replies that it has not, which is true in the sense that matters, though a Graveyard salvage tug once traded a kilo of morphine precursor with a far-orbit courier whose captain was a second cousin to one of the Musa twins, and what Directorate records do not contain they cannot contradict. The Inspector departs. A rest day is declared, and the station drinks shara.

The unspoken rule is this: Irkalla pays its Directorate tithe in manufactured components, precision-machined fittings and radiation-hardened connector boards that the Equatorial Ring's fabricators cannot match because the Graveyard's machine shops work to tolerances born of necessity rather than specification. The tithe is paid on time and in full. In exchange, the Inspector's reports mark Irkalla as "compliant and stable," and that phrase, in the Directorate's internal documentation, exempts a station from the regular population audits that can lead to reassignment of young adults to the Ring's labour pool. Every Irkallan knows this, and every Irkallan between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four works an extra shift in the machine shop during the month before an inspection, and no one speaks of why.

The Graveyard's relationship with Irkalla is neither correct nor cold. It is the relationship of a village to its hinterlands, mediated by vacuum and delta-v. The salvage tugs dock without warning, broadcast their arrival on the short-range channel, and request berthing space and water. Their crews are unregistered and answerable to no formal authority, but they trade in the goods that Irkalla needs and cannot fabricate: vials of bioreactor sealant, rolls of optical fibre, replacement bearings for the axial fans, and, once, a sealed cartridge of twenty-first-century paper books that a salvage crew had cut from a derelict library module drifting in the Graveyard's outer reaches. The books are kept in a locked cabinet on Deck B, and they are checked out on a paper ledger, and the station's schoolteacher uses them for the literacy curriculum. The most-read book is a collection of poems by a woman named Akhmatova, translated from the Russian, and the pages are soft from the touch of what must be two hundred pairs of hands, and the spine is cracked at the poem whose first line is "I should be prouder, prouder of you."

The tugs bring news, too: word of a far-orbit delegation that arrived at the Equatorial Ring under a flag of truce and left without agreement, word of a new biomining strain seeded in the shield mines that is producing rare-earth yields twelve percent above pre-war benchmarks, word of a Graveyard station called Chancel that lost pressure in its aft section and was abandoned, its inhabitants dispersed to neighbouring hulls. The news is old by the time it reaches Irkalla, carried by hand across vacuum on trajectories that sometimes take weeks to align, but Irkallans receive it with the gravity of dispatches from a front line. They know that they are the hinterlands, the outermost edge of a human presence that contracts and expands with each hull that fails and each salvage run that succeeds, and they know that the difference between a station and a derelict is measured in the continued rotation of the axial fans and the continued integrity of the pressure seals and the continued willingness of the people inside to do the work of staying alive.

On Irkalla, the work is distributed by a system of mandatory contribution hours that the station assembly recalibrates every quarter. Every adult between sixteen and sixty-five owes twenty-eight hours per seven-day cycle: eight in their primary skilled role, twelve in general station maintenance, four in creche or school duty, and four in agricultural labour. The system is enforced by a public ledger posted on the wall of Deck B's common area, and the ledger is handwritten on a sheet of salvaged display film, and Irkallans check it with the same reflexive glance that a ground-born person might use to check a watch. A name written in red ink means the person is in arrears. The shame of red ink is sufficient enforcement; in the station's history, the assembly has only once voted to escalate a contribution dispute to formal sanction, and the sanction was not exile but a double shift cleaning the atmospheric filters, and the person who served it is now the station's chief hydroponics operator and has not missed a shift in twenty-three years.

The station's ecology is a closed loop that leaks at a rate of about two percent of total biomass per year, and that leakage is the most dangerous number on Irkalla. Every kilogram of nitrogen, every gram of phosphorus, every milligram of selenium that cycles through the agricultural racks and the human bodies and the composting vats and back into the growing medium represents a molecule that arrived on a salvage tug or came embedded in the station's original hull. The leakage cannot be reduced to zero; the atmosphere processors that scrub CO₂ and return oxygen are imperfect, the composting vats lose trace volatiles through microscopic seal failures, and every time the airlock cycles a puff of station atmosphere is lost to vacuum. The station's relationship with the far-orbit exiles is thin and charged. The exiles at L4 and L5 regard the Graveyard with a mixture of contempt and longing: contempt because Graveyard inhabitants are the Directorate's refuse, too marginal to be worth governing, and longing because the Graveyard's salvage crews move freely through the near-band while the exiles are trapped in their Lagrange prisons, dependent on convoys that move at the Directorate's sufferance. Irkalla, as the Graveyard station closest to the Equatorial Ring's trade routes, has become an informal point of contact. The exiles' long-range broadcasts sometimes carry messages addressed to specific Irkallans—second cousins, former crewmates, a lover separated by the war's settlement—and the station's communications officer logs them and passes them along and does not mention them to the Inspector. The messages are encrypted under a pre-war algorithm that the Directorate's signals intelligence presumably cracked years ago, and the encryption is therefore a polite fiction, and the fiction is maintained by all parties because acknowledging that the Directorate reads every private message between the orbits would force a confrontation that no one wants and everyone would lose.

The exiles' dream of return is not Irkalla's dream. Irkallans do not dream of Earth. They dream of water, of propellant, of the next salvage run, of the harvest, of the axial fans never stopping. The planet's blue-white face turns beneath the observation dome, and Irkallans look at it the way a sailor looks at a shore whose ports are closed to him—with a recognition that is almost, but not quite, indifference. What matters is the station. What matters is the habitat. What matters is that the air moves, the wheat grows, the machine shop hums, and the children born in rotation learn to walk with the Coriolis lean.

The station's day begins at 0600 station time, which is a fiction. Irkalla orbits Earth once every ninety-three minutes, and the sun rises and sets sixteen times in every twenty-four-hour period, and the station's internal lighting cycles are entirely artificial. The day-cycle is an even sixteen hours of full-spectrum illumination, followed by eight hours of dim red light that the growing racks can still use for photosynthesis but that the human eye reads as night. The rhythm was set by the founding captain, who chose sixteen hours because the pre-war ESA logistics corps ran sixteen-hour shifts, and the choice has endured because it gives the station an extra hour of productive labour compared to the Equatorial Ring's fifteen-hour standard day, and Irkallans are quietly proud of this.

At 0600, the axial fans audibly shift pitch as they move to day-cycle power, and the station's internal address system, which is a repurposed ship-to-ship comm circuit and sounds like it, chimes twice. The first chime means the shift is beginning. The second chime means all pressure seals are nominal and the radiation monitors are green. The chime has never, in the station's history, been followed by a warning tone, but every Irkallan pauses for it anyway, for a half-second between the first chime and the second, because the one time they stop pausing will be the time the second chime does not come.

The morning meal is a bowl of wheat porridge flavoured with a yeast extract that tastes, according to Irkallans who have never tasted anything else, like soy sauce. The Directorate's citizens on the Equatorial Ring eat cultured proteins grown in vats and flavoured with chemical essences that approximate the pre-war taste of chicken, of fish, of coffee. Irkallans know this because the salvage crews sometimes recover Directorate food packaging from the Graveyard's waste streams, and the brightly coloured labels with their chemical ingredient lists circulate through the station as curiosities, like postcards from a country that no one thinks of visiting. An Irkallan child once asked her teacher why the Directorate had so many kinds of food while Irkalla had only porridge and yeast, and the teacher, whose name was Neema and who had been born on the station and had never seen a photograph of a chicken, said, "Because they have the ground and we have each other." The phrase became a saying. It is painted on the wall of Deck C's schoolroom in letters formed from the salvaged gold leaf of an old satellite's thermal blanket, and it is the first sentence that Irkallan children learn to read.

The second chime fades into the hum that is Irkalla's true voice. It is not one sound but a chord: the 400-hertz drone of the axial bearings, a sound so constant that Irkallans stop hearing it by the age of four and only notice it when it changes; the higher-frequency whine of the atmosphere circulators pushing air through the deck conduits; the subsonic thrum of the counter-rotating flywheel buried in the station's core, which keeps the habitat from precessing uncontrollably as its spin interacts with Earth's gravity gradient; and beneath all of it, the living noise of a thousand human bodies moving through a sealed cylinder eleven hundred metres long and two hundred and fifty across.

The spin that makes this hum is the spin that makes gravity. Irkalla rotates once every sixty-one seconds, producing 0.38 g at the inner surface of Deck A, which is the outermost habitable deck. The number was not chosen. It is what the founding hull—a pre-war asteroid-capture vehicle built on a rotating-boom architecture—delivers when run at the bearing's maximum safe rate, and every habitat module welded to the boom since has been designed to match it. Irkallans do not think of themselves as living at 0.38 g. They think of themselves as living at one Irkalla, and they adjust. A fall from a ladder bruises but seldom breaks bone. A thrown ball takes a parabola that curves visibly to one side as it flies, and children learn to correct for the deflection before they learn to write. A cup of porridge tilted too far does not pour; it slides out of the bowl in a slow, cohesive mass that holds its shape until it strikes the table, and the motion is so ordinary that no Irkallan would think to remark on it. Visitors from the Equatorial Ring, where the stations spin to a full 0.7 g, find Irkalla's gravity disorienting in a way that is not quite motion sickness and not quite dream—a lightness that makes their limbs feel borrowed.

The Coriolis force is the station's hidden architect. At 0.38 g and Irkalla's rotation rate, the force on a person walking spinward adds nearly a tenth of their weight; walking antispinward subtracts the same fraction. Irkallans lean into the change without conscious thought, the way a sailor leans into a deck's pitch. Stairs are always climbed on the antispinward side of a compartment, where the risers feel slightly shorter. Water drains from washbasins in a spiral that tightens noticeably as it falls, and the children learn the direction of the spiral before they learn the word for it—they call it "the little twist," and they test it by pouring water onto the deck plates and watching it run away from them in an arc that curves spinward. A child of six can reliably predict where a dropped object will land, and a child of six cannot explain why, but the prediction is in her body, learned the way a planetborn child learns that a ball thrown upward will come down in the same spot. The smell is the second thing a visitor notices, after the gravity. Irkalla smells of machine oil and growing things and human bodies and ozone and the faint, permanent tang of hot metal that comes from the bearings. The atmosphere recycling system is a cascade of biological and mechanical stages that has been patched and extended and repurposed across three decades, and each stage adds its own note. The algae tanks in Deck D's ag-section exhale a green, wet smell that drifts up through the ventilation shafts and mingles with the metallic scent of the water-recovery condensers. The machine shop on Deck B vents its cutting-oil aerosol into a dedicated filter loop, but the filter's activated carbon is years past its rated life and lets through a ghost of hydrocarbons that the nose learns to ignore. The crew quarters smell of clean sweat and the soap ration, which is a fatty-acid salt cooked in the station's own chem lab and scented with a peppermint oil grown in the botanical module's single medicinal herb rack. Irkallans do not notice any of this. They notice when the smell changes—when the algae tanks bloom too fast and push a swampy note through the vents, or when the machine shop's filters finally clog and are replaced, and the air goes strangely clean for a day before the carbon begins to saturate again. A change in the smell is a warning. A station's air is its blood, and Irkallans read it like a pulse.

The third thing a visitor notices is the hierarchy of decks, which is unspoken and absolute. Deck A, the outermost level and the one that rotates under the greatest centrifugal force, is where the command crew lives: the captain, the nav-and-comms officer, the chief engineer, the agricultural lead, the quartermaster, the medic. Their quarters are single-occupancy compartments with doors that close, and their children attend the schoolroom on Deck C but sit in the front row and are called on first. Deck B houses the skilled trades: the machinists, the electricians, the water chemists, the algae technical staff, the fabricator operators, the pilot who flies the salvage tender. Their quarters are six-person berths with bunks stacked three high, and they have doors but not locks. Deck C is the general population: labourers, cooks, the schoolteacher, the elderly who can no longer work, the children too young to be apprenticed, the infirm, the woman whose name is lost to the records but who walks the corridors singing pre-war pop songs that no one else remembers. Deck C's berths are sixteen-person bays with curtain dividers that do not reach the ceiling, and the smell of sixteen people living in close quarters is the baseline against which every other smell on the station is measured. Deck D, the innermost habitable level, is the ag-section and the mechanical core. The farmers and the algae techs and the junior engineers who grease the axial bearings work here, and they sleep in racks bolted directly to the bulkheads of the structure, where the spin gravity is weakest and the sound of the flywheel is loudest. Being assigned to a Deck D berth is the station's quiet punishment for failure. No one says this. No one needs to.

Below Deck D is the Core, which is not a deck but a volume: the central shaft running the length of the station where the bearings rotate, the flywheel balances the precession, the main power bus carries current from the solar arrays, and the air in the axis is microgravity. The Core is accessed through pressure hatches that are kept dogged shut except during maintenance shifts, and the engineers who work there move hand-over-hand along guide cables, their tools tethered to their belts, surrounded by the turning mass of the habitat at one remove. The Core is the only place on Irkalla where a human being can float, and Irkallan children dare each other to sneak through the hatches and experience the feeling, which they call "the swim." The punishment for being caught is two weeks of Deck D cleaning duty, and the children consider it worth the risk. The sensation of weightlessness, to someone born and raised in spin gravity, is terrifying and addictive in equal measure—the body's every instinct screams that falling is happening, and the screaming never stops, and the children come back from the swim with their hands shaking and their eyes wide and a look on their faces that says they will do it again as soon as they can.

The porthole is on Deck A, in the corridor outside the captain's quarters, and it is the only one of its kind on the station. Every other viewport on Irkalla is a laminated sandwich of polycarbonate and aluminium oxynitride, the standard pre-war transparency built for impact resistance and ultraviolet blocking. They are functional and slightly fogged from decades of micrometeorite pitting, and the view through them is serviceable. The porthole is different. It is a disc of actual silicate glass thirty-eight centimetres across, set in a titanium ring salvaged from a pre-war crew shuttle that the founding crew found drifting in the Graveyard during Irkalla's construction. The shuttle had been holed by debris and its crew was long dead, but its forward viewport had survived intact, and someone on the founding crew—the station's logs do not record who, though three different Irkallans have claimed the credit—decided that it should be cut out and brought aboard. The glass is thick enough to stop a handtool blow and was rated, according to the shuttle's faded certification plate, for a maximum differential pressure of two atmospheres. Irkalla runs at one atmosphere, and the corridor outside the captain's quarters runs at one atmosphere, and the glass could theoretically survive a decompression event on either side, though no one has tested this and no one wants to.

The glass distorts the light. Over thirty-five years in vacuum, the outer surface has accumulated a patina of atomic oxygen etching that gives it a faint golden cast when the sun strikes it at the right angle. The light that reaches an Irkallan eye through this porthole has come through actual glass, through actual vacuum, through the actual atmosphere of a planet that no human has touched since the war, and the quality of that light is different. It carries something that the displays cannot reproduce, a depth of blue in the oceans and a sharpness of white in the cloud banks and a particular gold in the deserts that makes people fall silent when they see it for the first time. Irkallan parents bring their children to the porthole on the child's fifth birthday and hold them up to the glass and say, "That is Earth. That is where we came from." Asia, where the monsoon rains have redrawn the river deltas and the automated crawlers of the shield mines gnaw endlessly at the exposed bedrock. The Americas, where the equatorial mass drivers fire on their fixed schedules and the microwave rectenna fields glow dully in the thermal infrared, invisible to the human eye but visible to Irkalla's external sensors and therefore known, in the abstract way that Irkallans know most things about the surface. The Pacific is a sheet of blue that takes up nearly the entire porthole when the station's orbit carries it over the ocean, and the blue is interrupted only by the white flecks of storm systems and the occasional brown stain of an algal bloom. Irkallans learn to read the Earth's face the way their ancestors read the sky for weather, and they can tell from the pattern of cloud over the Pacific whether the monsoon is early or late, and they can see when a dust storm is rising over the Sahara, and they know that these things matter to the robot estate and therefore to the orbits and therefore to the station, but they do not feel them in their bodies the way they feel the axial bearings' hum or the Coriolis lean of the stairs. Earth is a fact. Irkalla is a life.

Irkalla's morning moves through the decks in a wave that follows the shift-change chime. At 0600, the night-watch engineers in the Core log their final bearing-temperature readings, stow their tethered tools, and pull themselves hand-over-hand to the Deck D access hatches, where they re-enter the spin gravity with the particular heaviness that comes after eight hours in microgravity—a heaviness that feels, for the first few minutes, as though someone has doubled the station's rotation. The day-watch engineers take their place, and the bearing-temperature log passes from one tablet to the next, and the night crew climbs the stairs to Deck C for porridge. The stairs are steep and narrow, built to a shipboard standard that assumes every stairwell might need to serve as a pressure barrier in a decompression cascade, and the stair treads are worn in a pattern that reveals the Coriolis lean of a thousand feet over thirty-five years: the antispinward edge of each tread is polished smooth, while the spinward edge still shows the original non-slip texture. An Irkallan ascending the stairs places each foot slightly to antispinward of centre without thinking, and the motion is as automatic as breathing.

The porridge queue forms in the Deck C galley, which is a long compartment with stainless-steel serving counters salvaged from a pre-war passenger liner and a bank of induction heaters that run on the station's main power bus. The galley crew has been awake since 0500, stirring the great steel pots of wheat porridge and measuring out the daily ration of yeast extract, and the smell of cooking grain fills Deck C and drifts up the stairwells to Deck B and Deck A, where it mingles with the machine-shop hydrocarbons and the algae-tank green and becomes part of the station's morning chord. Each Irkallan receives one bowl of porridge, ladled from the pot by a galley worker who knows every face on the station and who adjusts the portion by an unspoken calculus: larger for the engineers who spent the night in the Core, larger for the pregnant women, larger for the adolescents in their growth years, smaller for the elderly who eat less, and a precise, measured, exactly-equal portion for the command crew because fairness is fairness and the captain eats the same porridge as the labourers.

The children eat standing up, because the galley's tables are few and the shift-change window is short and the schoolroom bell rings at 0645. The children's porridge is supplemented with a teaspoon of powdered milk protein recovered from the algae-processing vats, and the taste is chalky and slightly bitter, and the children eat it without complaint because they have never tasted any other breakfast and would not recognize milk if it were described to them. They know milk as a word in the old stories, a white liquid that came from animals called cows, and cows are as mythical to an Irkallan child as dragons are to a planetborn one. The schoolroom on Deck C has a poster of a cow, printed on recycled paper from the station's own fibre mill, and beneath the picture is the caption "Bos taurus — Extinct," and the children look at the poster with the same distant curiosity they bring to the porthole's view of Earth.

By 0630, the morning wave has passed. The galley is quiet, the porridge pots are scraped clean, the children are in the schoolroom reciting the station's pressure-safety drill in unison because the drill is the first lesson of every school day and has been since the founding. The engineers on Deck D are running the morning check on the algae tanks, measuring pH and dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentration with instruments that have been recalibrated so many times that the calibration itself is a station tradition passed from senior tech to apprentice like a guild secret. The machine shop on Deck B is warming up, the lathes spinning to speed with a rising whine that threads into the station's hum, and the machinists are pulling their cutting tools from the locked cabinets and examining the edges under magnifying lamps because a broken tool is a crisis when the next resupply is nine months away. The captain is in her quarters on Deck A, reviewing the overnight log from the nav-and-comms station, and the log tells her that the salvage tender's approach vector is nominal and the radiation monitors are green and the axial bearing temperature is steady at 62 degrees Celsius, which is within tolerance and exactly what it was yesterday and the day before and every day for the past eleven months since the last bearing service.

The station is a body of a thousand people breathing the same air, and Irkalla's morning is the moment when the body wakes and stretches and checks its own pulse. The hum continues. The Earth turns beneath the porthole. The porridge is eaten, the tools are inspected, the children learn to read, and the station carries its inhabitants through another sixteen-hour day-cycle in the river of orbits that is the only world they know.

The light on Deck C is the colour of old butter, and it has been that colour for thirty-five years. The Irkalla station is a spun cylinder seventy-eight metres long and twenty-two metres wide, rotating so that the inner surface holds just under half a standard Earth gravity, and the light fixtures are mounted in recessed channels along the ceiling curve, and the ceiling curve is also the floor curve is also the wall curve if you let your eyes unfocus and forget which way you think is down, which the children do not do because they were born here and down is where your feet go and up is where the air returns go, and the air returns are the great corrugated ducts that run the length of the cylinder at the zero-gee axis, painted bright yellow and stencilled with warnings in three languages even though the only language anyone on Irkalla speaks is the Directorate trade creole with about four hundred words of old Russian welded into the syntax.

Kael moves through the Deck C corridor at 0647, which is late for the schoolroom bell but not late enough to earn a demerit, and the corridor is exactly one metre twenty wide at the shoulder and two metres ten at the head, and Kael is fourteen and has grown four centimetres in the past year and now walks with a slight stoop that the physio has noted in his file and will correct with an extra set of spinal extension exercises if the stoop does not resolve by the next quarterly exam. The corridor walls are panelled in a composite material that the station's fabricators extrude from recycled fibre and waste polymer, and the panels are the colour of oatmeal and have been scrubbed so many times that the surface is smooth and slightly glossy, like the inside of a shell. Kael's mother is an air-handling technician, and she taught him to hear the difference before he could talk: "When the note goes sharp, the station is breathing hard," she said, and the phrase has stuck in his mind so that every morning at 0647, when the fans ramp up and the note climbs, he thinks, the station is breathing hard, and the thought is not poetic or sentimental but simply true in the way that a machine's operating state is true.

He reaches the stairwell at Frame 12, and the stairwell is a vertical cylinder one metre eighty in diameter with rungs welded to the wall, and the rungs are worn shiny in the centre from thirty-five years of hands and feet, and the pattern of wear is slightly asymmetrical because human beings favour their right hands when climbing and the right-side rungs are polished half a millimetre deeper than the left. The stairwell connects Deck C to Deck B, and Deck B is the machine shop and the tool library and the secondary electrical distribution node, and Kael is not supposed to be on Deck B during the morning shift because children under sixteen require a work permit for the machine decks, but the permit requirement is enforced by the station's social fabric rather than by any locked door, and the social fabric on Irkalla is woven tight enough that a fourteen-year-old boy walking through the machine shop at 0647 will be noted by every machinist on shift and reported to his parents by 0700 if his presence is unexplained.

Kael's presence is explained. He is carrying a broken water recycler filter housing from the Deck C hygiene module, and the housing is made of a polymer that the station's fabricators can print but cannot print well, and the machinists on Deck B have a lathe that can turn a replacement from a billet of recycled aluminium if you ask nicely and if you have something to trade, and Kael has something to trade. The something is a data chip containing a complete set of maintenance logs for the Deck C air-handling fans covering the past eleven months, which his mother compiled and which the machine shop's predictive-maintenance algorithm requires for its next calibration run. The trade was arranged last night over the station's text-only comms network, in a thread that Kael's mother initiated and that the shift supervisor on Deck B responded to with the laconic message "send the boy," and so Kael is being sent, and his presence on Deck B is therefore not a violation but a transaction.

The machine shop on Deck B occupies the entire circumference of the cylinder at Frame 18 through Frame 26, which is forty-two metres of floor length, and the floor is not flat but curves upward at both ends with the cylinder's inner surface, and the heavy machinery is bolted to reinforced mounting plates that are themselves bolted to the station's structural ribs, and every bolt has a torque specification that is checked weekly by the shift supervisor with a calibrated wrench. The lathes are arrayed along the portside wall, and the portside wall is the wall that is to your left if you are facing spinward, and "spinward" is the Irkallan directional system that replaces north-south-east-west because none of those terms mean anything inside a rotating cylinder. The four cardinal directions on Irkalla are spinward, anti-spinward, port, and starboard, and the children learn them before they learn to read, and the directional sense is so deeply embedded that an Irkallan who visits a non-rotating station experiences a persistent, low-grade disorientation that the medical literature calls "spin withdrawal" and that the sufferers describe as feeling like the world has gone dead under their feet.

Kael enters the machine shop at the anti-spinward end, and the noise hits him first: the lathes are running, and the milling machines are running, and the ventilation fans on Deck B are larger and louder than the fans on Deck C because the machine shop generates heat and metal dust and vaporised cutting fluid, and the air-handling system on Deck B exchanges the entire volume of the deck's atmosphere every six minutes. The machinists wear ear protection, but Kael does not have ear protection, and the noise presses against his eardrums with a physical weight that makes him want to open his mouth to equalise the pressure. The smell is the second thing: cutting fluid, which the station synthesises from waste oil and which smells sharp and slightly sweet; hot metal, which smells like iron and burnt carbon; and the faint, omnipresent scent of ozone from the electrical distribution panels. The machinists work in pairs at each lathe, one operating the controls and one managing the coolant flow and the chip clearance, and they wear coveralls made from the same oatmeal-coloured composite fabric as the corridor panels, and their coveralls are stained with dark streaks of cutting fluid and fine grey smears of aluminium dust.

Corin is the machinist who will turn the filter housing for Kael, and Corin is a woman of about fifty with grey hair cut short and hands that are covered in small, pale scars from thirty years of metal chips and sharp edges. She is standing at Lathe 3, which is a machine the size of a small refrigerator with a chuck that can hold stock up to fifteen centimetres in diameter, and she is examining a cutting tool under the magnifying lamp when Kael approaches. The cutting tool is a triangular insert of tungsten carbide, and the edge is worn to a dull silver line, and Corin is rotating it under the lamp with the expression of a person reading a difficult text. She does not look up when Kael stops at the marked safety line, which is a yellow stripe painted on the deck two metres from the lathe's base, because the safety line is a rule and the rule is that you do not speak to a machinist who is examining a cutting tool, and you especially do not cross the safety line while the lathe's chuck is spinning, and Kael has known these rules since he was old enough to walk onto Deck B with his mother and watch her trade maintenance logs for machined parts.

The chuck is not spinning. Kael waits. The waiting is a skill that every Irkallan learns: you wait while the airlock cycles, you wait while the water recycler runs its cleaning cycle, you wait while the comms array reacquires the relay satellite, and if you cannot wait without fidgeting you will not survive on a station where one person's impatience can rupture a pressure seal and kill everyone. Kael has been waiting for fourteen years, and he is good at it. He stands at the safety line with the broken filter housing in his hands and watches Corin examine the cutting tool, and after approximately forty seconds—he is counting silently, another Irkallan habit, because everything on the station is measured and counted—Corin sets the tool down on the bench, wipes her hands on her coveralls, and turns to him.

"You're the air-tech's boy," she says. This is not a question.

"Yes," Kael says. "I have the housing."

Corin holds out her hand, and Kael gives her the broken filter housing, and she turns it over in her hands with the same concentration she gave the cutting tool. The housing is a cylinder roughly twenty centimetres long and eight centimetres in diameter, and one end is cracked in a star pattern around the inlet port, and the crack is the reason the housing needs to be replaced, because a cracked housing leaks air into the water line and the resulting pressure differential causes the recycler to cycle incorrectly and the hygiene module's water pressure to fluctuate in ways that make showering unpleasant and that waste water, and wasted water on Irkalla is wasted propellant and wasted propellant is a crisis, and so the housing must be replaced, and the housing cannot be printed by the station's fabricators because the polymer formulation requires a pressure-casting process that the fabricators cannot replicate, and so the housing must be turned from aluminium, and aluminium is a controlled resource and requires a work order and a material chit and a trade.

"Crack's in the same place as the last one," Corin says. "That's a design fault. The inlet port's too close to the mounting flange, the stress concentrates there, it'll crack again in about eighteen months."

Kael nods. He knows this. His mother knows this. The engineers on Deck D know this. The housing design is a pre-war specification that was optimized for a polymer with a slightly different formulation than the one the station's fabricators can produce, and the substitution introduces a stress concentration at the inlet port that the original designers did not anticipate, and the solution would be to redesign the housing and print a new fabrication mould and re-qualify the mould through a hundred-hour test cycle, and none of that will happen because the station's engineering queue is backed up with higher-priority items and a cracked filter housing that can be replaced with a machined aluminium part every eighteen months is not a priority. This is how Irkalla works: you live with the fault, you work around the fault, you turn the replacement part on a lathe, and the lathe operator makes a note in the maintenance log and the note is read by the engineering committee and the committee adds the item to the queue at position 247, and position 247 means "will be addressed in approximately eleven years if no higher-priority items are added," and everyone understands this and no one complains.

"The chip?" Corin says.

Kael produces the data chip from his pocket. It is a small rectangular wafer of silicon and gold, encased in a plastic shell that has been repaired with a strip of adhesive tape, and the tape is beginning to fray at the edges. The chip contains the maintenance logs, and the logs contain the vibration spectra from the Deck C fan bearings, and the vibration spectra contain the evidence that Bearing 3 on Fan 4 is developing a harmonic at 117 hertz that indicates a incipient race failure, and the race failure will become a catastrophic failure in approximately fourteen months if the bearing is not replaced, and the bearing is a standard part but replacing it requires shutting down Fan 4 for six hours and six hours without Fan 4 means the CO₂ concentration on Decks A and B rises above the comfort threshold and the captain must authorize a station-wide work stoppage and the authorization requires a committee review and the committee review requires the bearing to actually fail first, because a station with so many lives breathing the same circulated air cannot afford to shut down a fan for a predicted failure when the failure is fourteen months away. This too is how Irkalla works.

Corin takes the chip and pockets it. "Come back at 1100," she says. "The billet's in the stores, I'll need to cut it down and rough-turn it before the finish pass. Don't be late, I've got the thruster-nozzle job at 1130 and if you're late you'll wait until the afternoon shift."

Kael nods again. He has learned that when a machinist gives you a time, the time is not approximate, and the time is the moment at which the part will be ready, and if you arrive at 1101 the part will have been given to the next person in the queue and you will wait until the afternoon shift, which begins at 1500 and ends at 2300, and you will miss the evening porridge and your mother will be annoyed and the water pressure in the Deck C hygiene module will continue to fluctuate for another day.

He turns to leave, and as he turns he feels the Coriolis force tug at his inner ear, because turning is the moment when the physics of the cylinder becomes physical in your body. The cylinder rotates and the tangential velocity at the inner surface is enough that when you turn your head spinward your inner ear moves slightly faster than the air around you and the fluid in your semicircular canals experiences an apparent force that tells your brain you are tilting when you are not tilting. The Irkallan children learn to compensate for this before they learn to walk: you turn your head slowly, you lead with your eyes, you brace your core against the false tilt, and after a few years the compensation becomes automatic and you stop noticing the Coriolis except when you are tired or sick or drunk on the fermented grain alcohol that the hydroponics technicians distill in a hidden still on Deck D and distribute at the midwinter festival.

Kael is not tired or sick or drunk. He is fourteen years old and his spine is growing slightly wrong and he is carrying a small, specific victory: the housing will be turned, the trade is accepted, the water pressure will be stable by the evening shower cycle, and his mother will look at the maintenance logs and see the bearing harmonic and sigh and add the item to the queue at position 248, or perhaps 249, and the station will continue to breathe and spin and hold its inhabitants in its aluminium embrace for another day, another sixteen-hour cycle, another rotation of the cylinder that is the only ground Kael has ever stood on.

The corridor curves upward ahead of him as he walks anti-spinward toward the stairwell. The butter-coloured light falls on the oatmeal walls. The air-handling note is still sharp: the station is breathing hard. Somewhere above him, five metres overhead and yet directly beneath his feet—because in a cylinder these directions fold into each other—the algae tanks on Deck D are receiving their morning nutrient injection, and the pH sensors are reporting values within tolerance, and the axial bearing is holding steady at whatever temperature it held yesterday and the day before, and the Earth is turning in its silent, poisoned arc below the porthole that no one on Deck C can see because Deck C has no portholes, only the long curved corridor and the stairwell and the galley with its porridge pots and the schoolroom with its poster of the extinct cow.

Kael climbs the stairwell to Deck C, and his right hand finds the worn, shiny rung, and the station hums around him, and the morning continues.

The stairwell door on Deck C is stuck. Not jammed—stuck in the way that station things get stuck, which is to say that the seal has deformed by perhaps a millimetre and the mechanism cannot quite overcome the friction and so the door will open only if you know to lift the handle rather than push it, and Kael knows this and Kael lifts the handle and the door releases with the soft sucking sound of a seal that needs replacement and Kael makes a mental note to add the door seal to the maintenance queue even though he knows the queue is already long and a door seal that opens with a lift is not a priority when the axial bearing is running hot and the recycling loop's phosphate levels are drifting and the Deck C hygiene module's water pressure is fluctuating and will continue to fluctuate until Corin delivers the housing at 1100.

The corridor on Deck C is identical to the corridor on Deck E except that the oatmeal-coloured walls are a slightly different oatmeal, because the paint on Deck C was mixed from a batch manufactured eighteen months after the paint on Deck E and the pigment concentration varied by two percent and the Irkallans who live on Deck C do not notice this and the Irkallans who live on Deck E do not visit Deck C often enough to register the difference, and if they did they would not mention it because mentioning a two-percent pigment variation is the kind of thing that marks you as someone who notices things that do not matter, and on Irkalla Station the list of things that do not matter is very long and the list of things that do matter is very short and the social contract depends on everyone agreeing which list contains which items.

Kael walks the corridor toward the galley. He passes the schoolroom door, which is closed, and behind the door he can hear the voice of Instructor Maren speaking the morning lesson to the younger children, the seven-to-elevens, the ones who have not yet been assigned their maintenance rotations. Maren is saying something about the nitrogen cycle and Kael does not stop to listen because Kael already knows the nitrogen cycle and Kael has a part to collect at 1100 and a water-pressure fluctuation to resolve and a mother who will want to know that the bearing harmonic has been logged.

The galley is empty. The porridge pots have been cleaned and stacked and the morning meal is over and the midday meal will not begin for another three hours. The galley is a long room with two trestle tables and a serving counter and a bank of food dispensers that are identical to the food dispensers on every other deck except that the Deck C dispensers have a slight tendency to over-dispense the salt ration, a fault that has been logged and queued and will be addressed when the maintenance schedule permits, which is to say not soon. The lighting in the galley is the same butter-yellow as the corridor. The air-handling note is the same sharp whine. The station breathes.

Kael walks to the far end of the galley where the maintenance terminal is mounted on the wall beside the water dispenser, and he reaches the terminal and he stops.

The terminal screen is dark.

He stands before the dark terminal and his mind runs through the diagnostic tree that every Irkallan child learns before they turn twelve. The power indicator is a small green LED in the lower-right corner of the terminal bezel, and the LED is off. The lights in the galley are on. The air handlers are running. The food dispensers are blinking their ready lights. The terminal is dark.

Kael presses the recessed reset button on the terminal's side panel. He holds it for five seconds. He releases it. Nothing happens. The screen remains dark.

He needs to log the bearing harmonic. He needs to check the maintenance queue. He needs to verify that the water-pressure fluctuation is associated with the bearing harmonic and not with some other fault that Corin's housing will not resolve. He needs to do his job, which is to carry information from the machinist to the log, from the log to the queue, from the queue to the supervisor, from the supervisor to the work order, from the work order to the repair, from the repair to the stable system, from the stable system to the station's continued existence, and at the end of this chain is the station's continued existence, and at the beginning of this chain is a fourteen-year-old boy standing before a dark terminal with a data chip in his pocket and a diagnostic tree that ends with a dark screen and no next step.

Kael turns from the terminal. He walks back through the empty galley. He climbs the stairwell to Deck B, his right hand finding the worn, shiny rung, his left hand holding the data chip in his pocket.

The stairwell door on Deck B opens without sticking. The seal is newer. Deck B is the administrative deck, the deck where the supervisors have their offices and the central systems core has its access hatch and the maintenance priority meetings are held every third day at 0900. The corridor on Deck B is empty. The administrative staff are in their offices.

The Deck B maintenance terminal is mounted on the wall outside the central systems core access hatch. The terminal is dark.

Kael stands before the second dark terminal. The power indicator is off. The manual restart does nothing. The fibre connection is inside a sealed conduit and Kael does not have tools and Kael is fourteen years old and Kael is standing on Deck B outside the central systems core access hatch and both maintenance terminals are dark and the lights are on and the air is moving and the station is breathing and the terminals are dark.

He should tell someone. He knows he should tell someone. The human protocol says that when the diagnostic tree is exhausted, you escalate. You find your supervisor. The supervisor for Deck C is Jasin, whose office Kael passes on the way to the access hatch, whose patience is limited, and who will ask questions that Kael cannot yet answer.

Jasin's office door is open. Jasin is sitting at her desk, a woman of perhaps fifty years with grey hair cut short and practical. Jasin is looking at her own terminal, a desk unit with a screen and a keyboard and a direct fibre connection to the central systems core, and Jasin's terminal is dark.

"Supervisor Jasin," Kael says.

Jasin looks up. Her face registers Kael standing in her doorway without an appointment and without a work order, and then her face shifts from neutral to the first increment of concern.

"The maintenance terminal on Deck C is dark," Kael says. "I came up here to use the Deck B terminal. The Deck B terminal is also dark. I performed the diagnostic tree on both units. They walk down the Deck B corridor toward the central systems core access hatch. The butter-yellow light falls on the oatmeal walls. The air-handling note is sharp. Somewhere above them and also beneath them and also around them, the cylinder rotates and the algae grow and the reactor operates and the Earth turns in its silent, poisoned arc below the portholes that Deck B does not have.

The hatch is closed. The yellow-and-black warning stripe is bright under the butter-yellow light. The placard reads AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY. The placard reads DO NOT OBSTRUCT. The placard reads 7342.

Jasin reaches for the hatch handle and pauses. She looks at Kael.

"You are authorised," she says. "Under my authority. If anyone asks, you are my assistant for this inspection, and I will log the authorisation as soon as a terminal becomes available."

"It's true," Jasin says.

"That's in there too. The secondary assessment found that the fractures have accelerated. The outer seal on Deck D is now—" She pauses again. "The engineer who wrote the assessment used the phrase 'catastrophic failure within twelve to eighteen months.' He was fired for it. He and his family are currently confined to quarters pending a review of his fitness for duty."

Jasin lowers the reader. Her hands are still steady. Kael does not understand how her hands are still steady.

"Why are you telling us this?" Jasin asks. "Why cut the trunk lines? What does any of this have to do with disabling the monitoring systems?"

Mira looks at her, and her calm face is suddenly very tired, the face of someone who has been carrying something heavy for a very long time and has only just now set it down.

But neither will the cover-up."

"You're forcing their hand," Jasin says. "You're creating a crisis they can't ignore."

"You'll lose your position," Mira says.

If I say I believed there was a genuine emergency—if I say I received a report that the hull was failing and I acted on it—they will have a harder time dismissing me than they would dismissing you."
