She sat in the purple light with the warm cylinder in her lap and the folded paper in her pocket and the sound of her own breathing loud in her ears. The station breathed around her. The condensation dripped. The regen pump wobbled through its imperfect cycle. And Marrow β the maker, the fixer, the woman with the worn left sole β did something she had not done in a very long time.
She cried.
Not a sob. Not a breakdown. Just tears, silent and hot, running down her cheeks and dripping onto the cylinder in her lap, where they sat for a moment in tiny beads on the warm silver before evaporating into the humid air of the ag-deck. She cried for a woman she had never met, a station she had never seen, five hundred and twelve people whose names she would never know. She cried for the far orbits, silent now, their lights gone dark. She cried for the Pinwheel, and for Kestrel's Rest, and for the daughter who had lost her voice to radiation sickness. And she cried for herself, for the weight she had been carrying without knowing it, for the years of patching and repairing and keeping a dying station alive with nothing but attention and will.
When the tears stopped, she wiped her face with the back of her hand and sat for a long moment, breathing. Then she placed the cylinder carefully back in its foam cradle, closed the lid of the crate, and stood up.
She knew what she was going to do. Not preserve it, Annalise had said. Not lock it away. Use it. Let it be part of the repair.
She would transcribe everything she could remember β the words, the sounds, the exact colour of the lamplight, the way the mechanism's rings had moved, the rough texture of Annalise's voice. She would write it down on paper, the station-made paper with its brown flecks, and she would make copies. She would make it part of the station's records. She would make it part of the teaching materials for the children who were growing up without any memory of the far orbits. She would make it part of the living knowledge of the station β the knowledge that Marrow was the keeper of, the knowledge that was her real work, the thing she did in the spaces between the monitoring logs and the scrubber checks and the patching of worn-out components.
She would make sure that the five hundred and twelve people of Kestrel's Rest were remembered.
She walked back through the ag-deck, past the protein vats and the nutrient mixing station, past the workbench where the ag-techs did their checks. The purple light fell on her shoulders. Her left boot made its soft, wet sound on the damp deck plates. At the hatch, she paused and looked back at the crate, sitting alone in the dark end of the deck, a visitor from a world that no longer existed.
"Thank you," she said aloud. Her voice was rough, rougher than she had expected. "Annalise. Thank you."
Then she pulled the hatch closed behind her and began the long walk back through the C-ring corridor, toward the spoke lift, toward the hub, toward her chair with its missing padding and her terminal and the monitoring logs that were waiting for her. The station was still breathing. The scrubber temperatures were still spread across their half-degree range. The regen pump was still wobbling through its imperfect cycle.
And somewhere in the void between the orbits, the far-orbit ship that had brought the crate β old and unmanned and running on a course that had been calculated by a dead woman on a dying station β was drifting silently into the dark, its mission complete, its message delivered, its memory passed on.
She did not know how long the ship had travelled. The letter said nothing of its launch date, and she had no way to calculate its trajectory from the fragmentary data in the routing code. But the foam in the crate had yellowed with more than months of age. It bore the deep amber colour of years, perhaps decades, of slow chemical change in the cold of the void. Annalise had been dead a long time. Longer than nine months. Longer, maybe, than Marrow had been alive. The war had taken the far orbits in stages, a gradual extinguishing of lights across the dark, and Kestrel's Rest had been one of the earliest to go. The cylinder had been drifting ever since, a message in a bottle on a sea of nothing, aimed at a station whose name its sender had never known, addressed to a woman identified only by the sound of her footsteps.
And it had arrived. Against every odd, against the debris fields and the radiation and the sheer indifferent vastness of the space between the orbits, it had arrived.
She reached the spoke lift and pulled the latch. The cage juddered and began its slow ascent toward the hub, carrying her back to her station, her work, her life.
In her inner pocket, the two pieces of paper β the slip and the letter β rested against each other, a small, dry weight over her heart. And in her mind, the memory of the recording was already settling into place, becoming part of her, part of the station, part of the long, unbroken chain of makers who kept the world alive.
She was Marrow. She was the keeper of the logs. She was the woman who walked with a different sound on the left. And she had work to do.
