This corridor is different from the ring. The air here carries a faint electric tang — ozone from the server racks, or perhaps from the signal repeaters that cluster at every junction, boosting the data streams that pour up from the surface. She passes through a pressure door marked T-4: TELEOPERATIONS and into the space that she thinks of, privately and without irony, as the temple.
The Teleoperations Chamber is a cylinder forty metres across, set perpendicular to the hub axis so that its floor curves gently upward at the edges. Wek is already searching the technical database. "Standard pre-war habitat module. The emergency access code should be — yes. Try 7-4-2-9-star."

Kala flexes her hands — her own hands, the ones that ache in the mornings and dream down the gravity well — and looks at the visual feed one more time. The amber light of the console is steady. The names are patient. The coupling ring is waiting.
She knows what she is going to do. She does not know what it will mean. But for the first time in four years, the station's low-frequency thrum feels different to her — not a reassurance, but a question. A question she intends to answer.

A full archaeological survey is authorized, to be conducted by a team that will descend from the station in a pressurized surface module — the first human presence on the lunar surface in thirty-five years. Kala is not on the survey team. She is an operator, not an archaeologist, and the Exchange does not consider her qualified. She leaves the guide rail where it lies. She walks. "Carpathia-4, according to the registry. Agricultural habitat. Was supposed to house twelve thousand. Registry says it went dark forty-one years ago." Harlow's voice is flat, deliberate, the voice she uses when she is not saying everything she knows. "We've been listening on the inter-gate channel since the first cycle. No response. But the atmo came through at pressure. Someone — or something — has been keeping the air good on the other side."
The Life Support tech hands Harlow a slate. She reads it, nods, and turns back to Kala. "We're opening the inspection hatch. You wanted to know what the air at a foreign gate feels like." She gestures toward the pressure door. "Now you'll know."
The hatch opens.

And a station called the Needle — no registry entry at all, but someone is there, and they've been listening on the inter-gate channel for twelve years, waiting for someone else to talk first."
She pauses. The council falls quiet.
