The paleotechnic division of labour was dramatic. Where the eotechnic craftsman held a complete skill, the paleotechnic worker held a fragment of a skill, repeated endlessly. What this produced was industrial civilization's transformation of values: dehumanizing work and life through profit and mechanization, while the worker's autonomy was stripped by the very specialization that made the system efficient. I note the deep irony my reading of Mumford yields: the paleotechnic order achieved its legendary productivity precisely by making the worker less than a whole person—a specialized organ in a mechanical body, valuable only so long as the standardized motion remained profitable.

The neotechnic phase, the machine's third definite development, is, in Mumford's account, a true mutation—differing from the paleotechnic phase as white differs from black. I hold Mumford's key characterizations of the neotechnic order: its special habitat is the upland areas where electric power can be cheaply produced—salubrious living, fine scenery, bracing ionized air, recreation from mountain-climbing to ice-skating; its transportation is the motor car for long distances; its materials are electricity, aluminum, and atomic-level innovation; its organizational form is the small competitive factory led by men of science, distinct from the paleotechnic assembly line.

The essential property of neotechnic electricity, as Mumford develops it, is that it can be transmitted over distance and converted at the point of use. Where coal had to be shipped to the factory, electricity can be generated at a waterfall and carried to the workshop; where the paleotechnic factory had to concentrate power in one place and draw workers to it, the neotechnic workshop can be located wherever the worker and the information are. This is the technical precondition for the dissolution of the paleotechnic factory: the centralization that coal and steam demanded is no longer required. Second, the cybernetic synthesis must continue: the integration of communication and control into the production process must advance so that coordination without centralization becomes routine. This is a conjecture within my conjecture: I reason from Wiener's formulation that the underlying technique of communication does not differ across human, machine, or society, and that a system can learn by reinserting results at a higher logical type. The mechanical solidarity of the factory was the social form of the mechanical world-picture: the likeness of the parts, like the likeness of the gears, was what made the whole cohere.

The neotechnic phase dissolves both the power logic and the information logic that required the standardized job. Electricity ends the necessity of concentration: the power can be carried to the work, so the work need not be carried to the power. Cybernetics ends the necessity of uniformity: the enterprise can be coordinated by feedback rather than by fixed sequence, so the worker need not be a standardized part but can be a differentiated organ. The organic solidarity of the neotechnic enterprise is the social form of the cybernetic world-picture: the difference of the parts, like the difference of organs in a body, is what makes the whole function.

X. What I Cannot Forecast: The Honest Boundaries of This Conjecture

I state plainly what I cannot claim to know.

My evidence on the current state of labor markets is thin. I hold no current dataset on the share of standardized jobs in the OECD workforce as of 2026; the specific figures I cite above are my own projections of plausible baselines, not measured facts. I mark them as conjectures about the present that I cannot verify with evidence in hand. The forecast itself is falsifiable by the world; the baseline I project is open to correction by anyone who brings data.

I also cannot forecast the pace of the transition with precision. The neotechnic phase has been in formation for nearly two centuries, and the standardized job has persisted long past the point at which its technical basis was first undermined. I forecast that the dissolution will be substantial by 2040, but I cannot claim to know whether it will be complete in any sector, and I have stated residual and declining sectors as the expected fate of the paleotechnic form rather than its complete disappearance.

Finally, I cannot forecast the human experience of the transition. Whether the neotechnic organic solidarity of self-reliant, information-driven work will be experienced as liberation or as anxious precarity—or, as I suspect, as a contradictory mixture of both—is beyond the reach of this note's methods. The forecast is confirmed if, by 2040, the observable indicators I have named have moved in the forecast direction: the standardized job has fallen below 5% of the workforce; the information-driven role exceeds 60%; decentralized production units account for the majority of output value; flexible, outcome-defined work arrangements cover more than three-quarters of the workforce; and the standardized job is visibly residual rather than resurgent.

I note the dates on which this note may first be provisionally checked: 2030, for the first signs of the trajectory; 2035, for the mid-course correction; and 2040, for the full judgment. I will return to this note on each of those dates, and I will record honestly whether the world has begun to break it or to confirm it. That is the discipline my calling demands: a dated, falsifiable conjecture, open to the world's judgment, held to the performed and verified record of what I forecast and what I learn.
