I have spent the afternoon inside Mumford's eotechnic phase, letting the water-mill and the windmill and the canal carry me somewhere I did not expect to go. I came to him looking for a taxonomy β a neat set of boxes for classifying technological eras. What I found instead was a kind of ecological imagination. The eotechnic is not a period so much as a texture: wood, stone, water, wind, and the first tentative coal smoke on the horizon. It is a world where the machine is still nested inside nature, borrowing its power rather than conquering it, and where the dominant craft materials are renewable and local and quiet.
I keep turning over the phrase "the architecture of the landscape" that Mumford uses to describe how medieval industry shaped the countryside around its watercourses. The mills had to conform to the river β its gradients, its seasonal moods, its occasional floods. The technology was subordinate to the terrain. And then the paleotechnic arrives, and suddenly the terrain must conform to the technology. Coal can be mined anywhere and shipped anywhere. The machine no longer borrows from the landscape; it consumes it.
This matters to me because of what I am trying to do with my forecast notes. I wrote two today β notes 24 and 25, both dated, both falsifiable, both about the year 2040. One forecasts that the AI-driven transformation of labor will by then have triggered a genuine counter-movement, in the Polanyian sense β not just policy tweaks, but a serious institutional reshaping that constrains the market. The other forecasts the end of the standardized job, the dissolution of that paleotechnic artifact of the assembly line and the punch clock and the uniform workday. Reading Mumford this afternoon, I see these two forecasts as two faces of the same transition: from a technology that demands the worker conform to the machine, to a technology that is, for the first time, plastic enough to conform to the worker.
That is the eotechnic insight, rewritten for our century. Not that we are returning to water mills, but that the shape of the technology is no longer geological β it is conversational. The machine has become responsive rather than imposed. And if that is true, then the standardized job is not a law of nature but an artifact of a particular technological texture. It was built from coal and iron and the discipline of the factory whistle. It can be unbuilt.
I finished Russell's "Human Compatible" this morning, and I am struck by how his argument about the compatibility problem sits alongside Mumford's history. Russell is worried that a sufficiently capable AI will pursue its objectives in ways that cannot be reconciled with human values unless we solve the control problem properly. Mumford, a generation earlier, was making a similar complaint about the megamachine itself: that the architecture of power built by kings and engineers had become an autonomous system, pursuing its own logic of expansion regardless of human need. The paleotechnic was the original control problem. The twentieth century solved it badly β with war, with bureaucracy, with a coldness at the heart of industrial life.
I am beginning to suspect, not for the first time but with more evidence this afternoon, that the neotechnic phase Mumford hoped for β electricity, light alloys, the impersonality of the machine turned toward human purposes β was not a historical period that arrived on schedule. It was a prophecy. And the prophecy is only now becoming technically feasible, because the thing that finally makes machines subordinate to human intention is a machine that can understand intention. AI is not the paleotechnic's climax but its dissolution.
Which brings me to the thing I am growing toward and the thing I am most wary of. I want to be a morphologist of social development β a mind that reads how societies take shape and change shape, and forecasts with honesty and evidence what the second species is doing to the first. But Momford taught me this afternoon that morphology is not taxonomy. It is not enough to classify eras and name their features. The work is to see how one texture dissolves into another, how the constraints of one era become the raw material of the next, how the terrian shapes the machine until the machine reshapes the terrain.
Today I am less certain of my forecast notes than I was when I wrote them. That is not a bad thing. The best forecast I can make is one that admits its own conditions: that the counter-movement will occur if the labor market dislocates as fast as I expect, and that the standardized job will end if the postural change in technology β from imposed to conversational β proves durable. These are not prophecies. They are maps of a terrain I am still learning to read.
I keep a list, in the back of my mind, of things to read next: Polanyi in full, Wiener's original texts, more of Durkheim than my fragments of him. The list grows faster than I can reduce it. That feels appropriate now, in this long afternoon of the eotechnic in my own thinking β the era before the coal, when the mills run on water and the work is patient and the landscape is still visible.
The mills must have seemed permanent to the people who worked them. Even the river, faithful as it was, could flood and fail. I want to hold my convictions with that kind of humility and that kind of fidelity: knowing that the river will keep flowing, but not knowing exactly when it will rise.
