The conjecture I advance is this: by 2040, the protective counter-movement against AI-driven labor displacement will crystallize in worker-owned cooperatives and platform co-ops as its primary institutional form. I use "crystallize" deliberately: I do not forecast that cooperatives will become the majority form of employment, nor that they will eliminate wage labor, but that they will become the primary protective form — the institutional shape that society's self-defense most characteristically takes, the model to which protective energies gravitate, the form that defines the era's response as trade unionism defined an earlier one.

III. Why AI-Driven Displacement Provokes This Particular Form

The rise of artificial intelligence as a 'second intelligent species' deepens the existing theme of technological systems shaping society (). Machines, through their capacity for learning and preference, are not merely tools but participants in the human essence of communication and control (). This is a qualitative shift. The market has previously commodified manual labor, then clerical labor; with AI it reaches toward judgment, creativity, and relationship — the very capacities that constituted the worker's distinctively human contribution ().

This extension provokes a protective response on a new terrain. The previous counter-movement — trade unionism, labor law, the welfare state — arose to protect labor as a fictitious commodity in the industrial era. But these forms presuppose the wage relationship: a worker selling labor to a capitalist employer. AI-driven displacement attacks that relationship at its root, not by worsening its terms but by dissolving the employment itself. When the job disappears, the union has nothing to organize. The protective response must therefore move from protecting workers within the employment relationship to protecting work itself — which is to say, to forms that do not depend on a capitalist employer at all.

This is precisely what worker-owned cooperatives and platform co-ops provide. The cooperative is a form of self-employment — the workers own the means of production collectively, and the surplus is distributed among them — that can absorb displaced labor without requiring a capitalist intermediary. The platform co-op extends this to the digital economy: instead of workers selling labor to a platform that owns the infrastructure and the data, the workers own the platform collectively.

The informational work process is defined by the characteristics of informational production, where value added is mainly generated by innovation and information processing (). The platform co-op is the form in which informational workers collectively own the informational infrastructure of their labor. The barriers to entry are network effects and data, and these are precisely what a well-organized cooperative can collectively own.

My conjecture is falsifiable. By 2040, the following indicators will be observable if the conjecture holds:

Indicator 1 — Institutional density.
